Enlisted people are referred to by their rank (Private, Corporal, Sargant, ect...) Officers (notated by O in their rank) are to be referred to as Sir/Ma'am or their rank. Enlisted people are never to be referred to as sir/ma'am, and many will be offended by it. (call a Master Chief sir and they will yell at you and tell you they work for a living.)
