I'm talking about the first one, as I've not played any of the others.

But yeah like, I found the characters boring and forgettable, and the open world thing was jarring for a Xeno game. The story was also slow and not well-paced.

So then I read on Wikipedia that certain critics actually gave the game a perfect score? I wouldn't even give any of my favorite games that kind of rating. I realize that perfection is largely subjective, but you guys feel me?

Feel free to add your own contributions to my topic. Believe it or not, I really wanna hear what you guys have to say! I doubt any feedback here will compel me to try the game again, but hey, there's always that sliver of a chance. :)

Are you saying Xenosaga isn't slow and well-paced? Xenosaga episode 1 is one of the slowest games I've ever played.

What area are you at? Halfway shouldn't mean anything to you if you haven't played the game before.

I'm 25 hours in myself after giving it another chance and I agree. It actually is interesting when the plot is advancing but it's the fucking 2-3 hours between advancement that's killing me.

Honestly, it's been several years since I played it, so I don't remember the specific area I was in; but a game shouldn't have to take that long to become interesting. I hear it builds up to something greater later on, but if I didn't care about any of the characters up to that point, is it really gonna matter that much?

Xenosaga is way too cutscene-saturated; that its biggest flaw. So in that regard it's slow-paced.

But I felt like the story events moved along better and were generally more interesting.

Way too many people put XC1 on a pedestal, unfortunately. I'm a huge fan of the series (every game so far I've loved), don't get me wrong, but XC1 is not perfect and is probably the most vanilla and basic one of them all. XC2 actually has better, more developed characters, IMO. They may be defined by their cliches (Rex's naivety, Tora's pervertedness, Zeke's unluckiness) but there's so much more to them and they interact with each other so much better than in XC1. The world is also far more fleshed out in 2. Some people who analyze these stories even compare the world's history with how Xenogears handled its world.

That said, 2 also has a lot of flaws that may break the experience for some. The voice acting isn't as good as in 1 which kinda ruins some impactful scenes at times (mostly a case of not knowing what the scenes look like and reviewing them before making their performance, a privelege the VAs for XC1 had), the gameplay starts off slow and takes forever to actually get really interesting (but being fair I think the gameplay gets better than XC1 when it does), areas are more compact-designed but exploration is hampered by field skill checks that would've been interesting to implement, but are tied to...a gacha system. That's probably the big issue right there. It doesn't use real money, but RNG can screw you over on a lot of side content because of it. It never prevents you from progressing the story though.

Xenogears and Xenosaga are some of the biggest slogs I've ever played. Xenoblade is light years better in its pacing.

I enjoyed the combat and exploring the environments, along with the RPG systems. The story was fine, but it was elevated by excellent JRPG voice acting (not have voice acting in general though). Even XC2 is a HUGE step down in VA. So I had fun.

I should note i played the definitive version which allowed me to level and delevel. That was a HUGE benefit imo. Plus decoupling gear with fashion.
