Well obviously when it happens so rarely no one has any experience driving on it. And we dont buy tires that work well on ice either.

i dont think that is accurate for the north. Cause in Illinois 3-6 inches is no where near enough to close anything.

How I felt as a Detroiter. But then again, they have been shutting down more liberally in the last decade or so. My parents used to always say how back in their day, they would still be open with 1 or even 2 feet of snow.

Seems relatively accurate although I live in a 2nd-tier area and there were definitely many times growing up where the snow had to get well over 12 inches before schools closed down.

Also, it always felt like my school was the very last to get announced, lol.

It really depends on when the snow falls

3-6 inches right before rush hour when the plows dont get a chance to clear roads its absolutely enough

Eh around here places only really shut down during extreme cold. Even 1 feet of snow rarely places shut down. Though my mother talks a lot about walking to school in 2 feet of snow when she went to high school, so I guess more shut downs happen now.

Seems accurate. I live in Los Angeles and there's a massive increase in traffic accidents anytime it rains. If we got actual snow here, it would cause a county wide panic.

I remember the struggle. A bunch of snow outside and us diligently watching the ticker on the morning news to see if our district would be listed as being closed, only for the list to move past where we would be listed.

Snow days were super rare when I went to school in NYC. The only times I can remember having them was when our school specifically had a problem, not a citywide thing.

You can't tell me that the south considers literally any amount of snow on the ground as reason for closing schools. That is fucking nuts.

Thing is, it doesn't happen so rarely. It happens every winter. They have plenty of experience. They don't need any snow tires. They just need to not freak the fuck out. These are the same people who panic buy butter, milk, and toilet paper like any unusual weather means they're going to be trapped without electricity for weeks.

I remember the problem in my district was there was a certain (small percentage) of kids who had to be bussed in from the boonies over the mountain here. they didn't have a high school up their way. so even if we got a dusting it was SCHOOL CANCELED. didn't happen too often but it did happen.

Some areas literally have 0 budget for it. I remember when georgia got hit hard, guys in my state 3 states away were getting paid $300/hr to plow down there

I also worked at Camp Lejeune in NC, a d they close the Marines base just because it might snow lol I liked that

Something to consider about the south is that were much more likely to get freezing rain and ice as opposed to snow and we don't have experience driving in it at all. Super dangerous situation.

Here in VA, were famous for having temps be 39 during the day and then 25 at night. Always a freeze and thaw going on

I remember back when I was in 10th grade, we had gotten to school and it started snowing. It wasn't even that bad. During homeroom an announcement was made over the PA system that we were getting sent back home.

No sooner then school was dismissed and everyone was on the buses pulling out, it stopped snowing. Didn't snow the rest of the day.

Got a three day weekend out of nothing.

While that indeed sounds like a valid excuse on the surface, Floridians also drive like shit when it is raining and that's like 70% of the weather we have here

Reminds me of the time back in high school when there was 2 feet of snow and my school was still open, I was on the bus and on the way we passed by a yellow sports car plowed into a snowbank.

It's nowhere near as dangerous or inconvenient as the average southerner makes it out to be. It literally only takes being consciously cautious when the weather has been unusual.

I once went to school with over two feet of snow before. I'm pretty sure we were the only ones in the state that didn't cancel. But the superintendent of schools at the time was kind of a dumbass when it came to snow. I actually was in the same grade as one of his sons and while we were sitting in class one of the kids told him to give his dad a swift kick in the ass for him.

i think we all get that superintendent every now and then. Usually half the school doesnt show when they pull that.

Will yeah, it's not a guaranteed accident if you drive in the snow. But statistically speaking, more accidents happen in the snow than in dry weather conditions.

I live in Los Angeles and even when it rains, the number of accidents increase substantially, because many people don't drive any slower than they normally would. So if it snowed in a city where it doesn't snow often (or at all. LA hasn't gotten actual snow since 1962), it would absolutely be dangerous. I sure as hell don't trust the crazy drivers of Los Angeles to handle snow safely.

Bro, we could have a mile of snow straight up and nothing would close in NY. So fucking annoying. Icy roads is no joke.

I remember hearing The Ichabod Crane school always being closed.
It's like they built that school on the side of a mountain or some shit.

I walked to school. There was a day when people were saying that a bus was literally sliding down a hill in my towns broadway due to ice. I was in homeroom for like 2 hours.

Our super intendant, who of course was a dick wouldn't shut down for anything.
Apparently, they got a kickback from the state for each kid in the school that day.

Yeah, Snow days were pretty rare unless it was like that storm in 93. I remember my bus driver saying multiple times frick that I'm not going down the hill today. Those kids parents are going to have to drop them off. One time the bus driver even had to call the school because we were just sliding on the way up the hill to get someone to tow us up rest of the way.
