Enjoy these 59 seconds of my summer festival audition tape!

https://youtu.be/fME9usL9pgQ

video is not of the highest quality, because I had to make due with what I had, which includes a balking ceiling fan light that was impossible to avoid if I wanted my camera in a position that captured the full instrument lol

I understand. It took me about 2 years of studying it before I even actually enjoyed the music.

@SiO4 youre somewhat of a classical music buff right? care to give some feedback?

Hey thats fantastic bruh, super super clean too

that switch at 0:40 to the more minor-ish melody also sounds beautiful juxtaposed with the riff right before.. especially cool paired up with the bow

great work man, yeah - thats some serious skill and you can totally hear that!

dunno much classical myself.. just know that Tchaikovsky concerto no. 1 is beautiful

Debussy (not to be confused with Gary Busey) is also awesome.. just dont know where to go as far as that road goes

how long does it take ya to learn a piece like that? I suck at reading sheet lol :s

Thanks man! I learned this movement back in summer but put it away and didnt actually start working it up to audition-level until early december, and recorded it on 1/9. I memorize pieces fairly easily usually, so Im not reading in this recording. I usually am working on 8-9 solo movements at a time, with most of them being longer lol (Bach cello suite movements are common requirements on auditions because theyre short and difficult)

I understand that, brass is harder to come around to. There is plenty of great classical music that is just for string orchestra, string quartet or solo music for violin/piano, for example, if you ever want recommendations!

If anyone has interest, I can post the concerto movement I had to record for the audition as well. It doesnt sound as complete because its meant to be accompanied by piano/orchestra, but for auditions sake they dont require that

Isn't Bach Baroque (not Classical)?

Was this from last summer or for the upcoming season? If that former, good job. If the latter, good luck! I hope you get it!

Yeah, Baroque period, under the catch-all term of classical music that most people lump it all together with lol. This is applying for this upcoming summer, and thank you!

Shit, I feel late to this...but I did get that haircut.
I'm probably going to triple post, but @Bananana
Thank you for the tag...I am not even sure how you would remember me in this.
But if you ever want to hear me blather on about something make in Bach or The Adirondacks.

Sorry for the late response.
I don't even know I missed a topic with the name Bach in it?!
~Must have been catnapping. I've been known to do that. >_>

I do know this piece and all of Bach's Cello suites very well.
You killed it, dude, the only real critique I could make would be you got a little excited at the runs at about the 34 second period. But that really doesn't matter.

Have you tried the Prelude?

Also, it is worth noting that Bach wrote that when the Cello was in its infancy.
As I recall, he happened to have a player that he knew could pull it off so he wrote these pieces.
I think at the time it was more of a Cello de gamba. At the time it wasn't particularly normal for an instrument to be played solo, and have parts effectively accompanying themselves.

Bach was mind-blowingly ahead of his time.
You have to remember, he lived and died before Beethoven and Mozart were even born.

Thanks man! I hear what you mean with getting excited lol. I learned the whole suite, but this movement is the one I worked to audition-status.

If memory serves, cellos were somewhat different and more gamba-like, and the 6th Suite actually is believed to have been written for a 5-string cello that would make it easier to play higher notes. Solo instrumental music was pretty well established with violins anyway, but he really innovated for the cello (even though these pieces werent played much because he didnt publish them widely lol).

Yeah, Bach was definitely pretty astounding, and even more astounding is that he was relatively unknown in his time. In one sense I think he did belong in his time, because he really defined the Baroque period, where Mozart later went on to do so with Classical.

Cool post. Two thumbs up. (No sarcasm.)

I miss playing music. I haven't played with a group since I was pregnant with my son. He's 16 1/2.

Oh, except for playing with my college band at alumni events. But that's a different instrument and very different style of music.

Ya, Bach wasn't as well know for reasons, not the least of which is that most of his music was write, 'For the Glory of God.
As where Handel wrote many more pieces that were meant for a wider audience.
On that point though, I read a quote once that said, Bach could have written any part of the Messiah, but Great was the Company was the only song he probably would have.
Also Handel bitched out on an Organ play-off that rumored for a bit.

That didn't stop Bach from showing up Fredrick the Great however with his Musical Offering. ~That's a whole other store.
Not only did Bach define the Baroque period, he blew the doors off it.
