I always thought it was kind of lacking compassion when people see a tragedy happening to someone and take a picture like it's an exhibit and just something to make their life more interesting. Like, this person is going through one of the worst moments of their life and you're just gonna add to it by pulling out their phone and treating them like you're personal entertainment. It's gotta feel shitty to look around in that moment and notice people don't give a shit about you, they just care about their feeds.

But this appears to be the norm and completely acceptable in our society. I guess sometimes the person gets scolded for that being their reaction to seeing tragedy, but not enough.

This is assuming you can't physically help someone. I'm not asking if you'd let someone be more harmed just to get a picture. That's way less of a grey area and just obviously trash behavior.

I don't know. But i can say that some of the most interesting images of our history and the reality of said history have come from tragedy. I don't mean interesting in an entertaining way, i mean it in an eye opening way.

That's a good counter argument. I guess I was thinking something non historic tho. When I made thos topic, I was thinking about like a tragic car crash that could involve deaths. Something that just hurts the people involved and their loved ones.

Probably not. I think you need to be one of those people that's sees life as "content" to do that consistently.

Idk if its always on purpose, I would assume sometimes people catch messed up stuff in pic or video by accident.

but yea my first inclination wouldnt ever be to grab my phone and start filming if something terrible was happening

Yes, but probably only in a staged sense, or in the aftermath of something, rather than in a present state. Taking anything during an active event feels too exploitative to me, and I generally find the aftermath a more interesting subject anyway. (I shot a bunch of stuff in June after the first couple nights of George Floyd protests/riots for example)

It does seem like it's deeply ingrained. I feel like a normal person doesn't even think about capturing it because they're distracted by feeling concerned. At least, that's my experience.

Also, this is usually followed by posting it for others to see without permission from the person you're broadcasting to everyone on one their worst moments. I'm a non violent person, but I could see that getting to me and making me do something stupid tl that person.

Counter to that would be, you never know what will become historic. Now that said, if like my neighbor got shot outside his house and his family was crying over his body I wouldn't run out with my phone.

...but even that said, not too long ago a cop in the Philippines shot and killed a woman and her son. Someone posted a clip of the family crying with the body right there...And the raw reality of it really put things in perspective. not that i don't know the reality of it, but somehow seeing the raw emotion just gives you a different feeling.

That's a good expanded take. I guess as long as it's not like capturing the people involved and you're already pass all the tension, it's not really that bad. I couldn't see myself getting mad if the person left me out of it and made it less personal to me.

No, I'd probably be way too scared if it was in progress too. My body doesn't handle conflict very well.

Man, you coming with the curveballs lol.

Id still like to see permission from those involved before posting. Like, of course that makes me think back to Emmett Till, but that was his own mothers decision. I can't imagine if she wasn't prepared for that and someone else did it. But even if they did, the impact it had was undeniable..does that make it ok? I don't feel like I can answer that.

You definitely bring up good arguments that make this way less black and white than I originally thought.
