First, great game. They nailed the combat for the most part. Characters are good. Music is wonderful.

Now, for the story...I guess there are hints that this Aerith isn't the Aeris from OG FF7, because she says several things about having knowledge of the future. And with Sephiroth, who I clearly familiar with Cloud. So are these 2 characters from some alternate dimension and thrown into the game somehow, and everyone else is an original version?

So basically, this Aerith is the OG. She knows there's something off and knows more than she should because the planet is speaking to her. She doesn't fully know everything and may even be fed lies at some points (suggesting the Whispers are spirits of the dead crying out in pain, when that's not true). The reason why the Whispers appeared is because Sephiroth, in all his tomfoolery within the Lifestream, is appearing in the past and disrupting the natural flow of events to try to create a future where his plan is successful (presumably).

Aerith is the original. The lifestream is sending visions to her from the future.

The Sephiroth you encounter the whole game isn't even the real Sephiroth. He's a clone. The real Sephiroth is trapped in a crystal very far away manipulating the clones into doing shit for him.

Exactly.

And I think Sephiroth is aware of it, too

Also, while they are references to Advent Children and Crisis Core, I still hold that the phantoms you keep fighting are clearly the original versions of yourself trying to prevent you from changing fate.

The three you fight at the end (Rubrum, Viridi, and Croceo) are hinted to be Kadaj, Loz, and Yazoo from Advent Children per the FFVII Remake Ultimania. One of Croceo's moves is even named after Yazoo's gun in the Japanese version.

Sephiroth after defeating Cloud at the "Edge of Creation": Seven seconds until the end. Be we can make it in time. The future is up to you Cloud.(Accurate translation)

Until the end of the game Sephiroth seems to have been toying with Cloud, but he's really been testing him to prepare him for whatever lies ahead. Basically Sephiroth doesn't want to disappear, but in truth he doesn't want Cloud to either and it seems as if he doesn't want for them to have their fated confrontation that came at the end of the original FFVII. He wants Cloud to join forces with him so they can ultimately oppose "Fate" together. We don't know why he even needs Cloud's help considering he is much more powerful than him, what "Fate" exactly is, or why Sephiroth even needs to worry about fate in a literal sense anymore considering Cloud and co. had just destroyed the Whispers, whom seemed like they solely existed to interfere with and stop things that could change events and prevent them from proceding along their predestined course. Because of that, in a alternate reality, in the past, Zack survived. Biggs survived and possibly Jessie as well and are alive in likely a alternate dimension as well. It seems like Sephiroth is concerned with bigger threat out there than himself, we just don't know what it is. I think Aerith is a bit misguided, but understandably so considering how crazy everything is. Sephiroth is probably not going to be their nemesis this time.

I suspect the big reveal of the next game is that Sephiroth winds up "good" (or at least an anti-hero). If they really want to get meta they can even make Aerith a sort-of anti-villain as she fights to maintain the original timeline, against the wishes of Cloud and Sephiroth. With a "Aerith kills Sephiroth" twist or some crap.

There's something weird and off-putting about Aerith in FF7 Remake. She's coy and clever in ways that strike me as somewhat concerning. Like she's aware of a larger plan (or trying to organize one).

Who knows with Nomura - whatever it is, it'll be stupidly complicated for seemingly no reason.

There is another Sephiroth that Square has labeled as ??? that shows up in the beginning and the end of the game. So far everything suggests that ??? Sephiroth is from post Advent Children.

I shill this in every FF7R topic but I want it to happen so bad, it'd be hilarious.

We know that Sephiroth killing Aeris in the original contributes to screwing up his plan. Holy fails because she casts it too late, right before he kills her, but she's able to stop Meteor because she's dead and able to control the Lifestream.

Seph knows this. Timeline aware Aeris knows this.

I want Seph and Aeris' Wacky Shenanigans where she's trying to off herself and he keeps having to stop her. Sticking forks in electrical sockets. Throwing herself off of buildings. Trying to hold her breath until she passes out. All the while Seph is stopping her like an exasperated parent.

I actually think it was Aerith that was meddling with the timeline, possibly to save Zack. Iirc the only time the whispers appear when she isn't present is when Jessie hurts her leg. Every other time they are always targeting Aerith. We also see Aerith lie to the others, most obviously to Cloud about Sephiroth. We also see her meddling with people's mind's directly, vas we see her do to Marlene and Red XIII. Keep in mind, when she does it to them it does the same static mental haze that Cloud gets when he's around her. She may have even been the one to show the vision of Meteor to the heroes, as Sephiroth wasn't around at that point and hasn't shown to be able to mentally manipulate regular humans like Tifa and Barrett, while Aerith has.

If you really like walking slowly in video games, it's the GOAT

Combat is good, I enjoy how they fleshed out Midgar but don't really agree with the liberties taken with the story

I agree with this

If they had just remade the game in 3D with that combat, maybe just fleshed the story out a bit, it would probably be my favorite game of all time

As is, man, it was an 8/10 at best IMO, the story changes were mostly silly, the pacing was rough and there was a lot of filler

The Wispers are trying to maintain the original timeline. This is painfully obvious and confirmed by Square.

In the beginning Aerith is being swarmed because Sephiroth is trying to stop Cloud from meeting Aerith so the Wispers are keeping her in place so Cloud runs into her. Also the Wispers show up plenty time without Aerith being present. They stop Jessie on the pillar, threw Wedge out of a window, attacked Seventh Heaven.

Yes, I'm not arguing that. I'm saying from Aerith's actions in game, it's just as likely she is the one(or one of the two) who are actively trying to change things. Besides, it's her that pushes you into confronting Sephiroth early, and breaking the original timeline at the end. Which she lied to the other characters to get them to that point, and the new timeline just happens to benefit her directly.

Edit: All I'm saying is we see her alter people's minds, lie to the others, and generally be shady with her future knowledge. I don't think it was all Sephiroth's doing.
