usually after about 30 minutes of the computer being on, the fan (i think) makes a very loud whirring noise. ive tried blowing compressed air in the fans but it didnt seem to help.

should i assume the thing is busted and i need a new one?

I think that's a safe assumption. Do you notice it getting extra hot too?

The sound is probably the fan. Some power supplies have a variable speed fan that kicks in at higher speed as it heats up.

fan berings are often cheep, the fan is the easiest to replace part of the power supply.

...

Put "buy new upgraded power supply" on your to do list and watch for a sale.
