No. If anything it would empower him and his base. They'd get it in their head that today worked in their favor, and when it came time for his second term to end they'd do something like this again.

This. At that point you've set the example that he isn't bound by our electoral rules. By letting some serve another term after they lost the election you've taken away the restraints of Democracy and crowned them a king.

Edit: I might have misunderstood you. I'm saying it's perfectly legal for Trump to lose the 2020 election, but still run again in 2024.
