it's so weird when i read articles like this. have flashbacks to o-chem

which i have barely used that knowledge in years

Thorium has -12 oxidation state?

i guess?

honestly my industry jobs required so little actual chemistry knowledge it kind of went into cold storage

that is why my long term goal is actually to go into education. because this stuff is super interesting. and i'd like to share my passions for chem and geo with a new generation

well and there is also only 2 pi electrons. which to me is also crazy. i fucking love chem.

the building blocks of the universe.

also i studied chem partly because i knew i'd get to light things on fire in lab lol.

The ring current is twice as strong as in benzene and similar to what is seen in porphine, a 26 -electron compound.

like wtf? that's cool as hell

Dehnen hopes that the findings serve as an inspiration, that you should never stop with things that you know. Uncommon compounds such as this one can serve as molecular models of metal alloys and could even be used as catalysts. The Marburg team is now examining whether the cluster shows reactivity typical for aromatics, for example susceptibility to electrophilic substitution.

i'd love to be on that Marburg team. studying the possibility of E1 and E2 nucleophile shit? with aromatic metal? that would be way interesting.

oh wait, read that wrong. wouldn't be E1 and E2

would be SN1 and SN2 subs

the Es are elimination reactions

Electron Shell Configuration:

2s2 2p6
3s2 3p6 3d10
4s2 4p6 4d10 4f14
5s2 5p6 5d10
6s2 6p6 6d2
7s2

honestly been too long since gen chem. but i'd guess it can sometimes because of all of the f electrons? honestly i don't know for sure

common oxidation state appears to be +4 actually

so there is some weird shit when you get into aromatic metallic rings maybe?

before tonight i didn't even know such a thing as aromatic metallic rings existed tbh

@Questionmarktarius

you must have some kind of scientific background? or just liked chem in school maybe.

if yall can't tell im super excited about this. but i'm also quite drunk lol.

aromatics are just weird anyway.

ya. loved learning about them though. and then getting into conjugation and stuff. man o-chem was so cool. it really expanded my worldview honestly. like before that i didn't really understand how like the bigger world of chem worked. because gen is more about like metals and nonmetals. then o-chem is all about carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen mostly. the building blocks of life. crazy shit.

and when i learned more about like reaction rates. catalysts. etc.

and o-chem lab was awesome. like extractions and distillations. reflux.

fuck. i made a lot of money in industry. but i hated it like 80% of the time. and it was more specialized industry knowledge than pure chem.

then as a lab assistant for the U's chem dept i got to like make gun cotton, set up thermite demos. etc.

i miss the U days. things were so much simpler. happier. interesting.
