For all intents and purposes, as a character, he was identical to T2 bad terminator.

I enjoyed it but it was pretty dumb they tried something bold like killing John Connor only to repeat the major story beats of T2.

Nah, the Rev 9 Terminator(s) were creepy in a great way, but Robert Patrick was more menacing. Him and Gabriel Luna look sort of similar, but IMO Patrick was good casting as the villain. I remember an old interview where he said he based his performance off a praying mantis, and I think he succeeded. On the other hand, I want to see Luna as a rebel in any new Star Wars project or maybe a hero in a Western.

Dark fates problem is that most of what it did was already done by other terminator movies.

it is like they thought lets have a t1000 but make him black metal this time! Nice! And lets have the hero be a human/robot hybrid!! Roxor!! And other stuff like that.

the girl theyre protecting throughout the movie is a terrible actress too.

with all of the above out of the way, the movie wasnt too bad. The reviewers always react like this when an established franchise becomes more diverse, so it was to be expected.

had t3, salvation and genysis not existed and this movie had been dressed in the early 2000s itd have been a success.

and this is what the director intended too.

those movies hurt dark fate:

/ the genysis bad guy was already a dark liquid metal robot
/the salvation good guy was already a robot and human hybrid
/t3 already had a hot lanky chick (though she was bad)

sure, those were exactly the same, but similar enough that almost nothing in dark fate felt new.

as a side note, t1 and t2 were good because they were basically sci-fi horror movies, you always have an angry unstoppable being slowly walking towards you while you and the other good guys try to outrun him with an impending sense of doom, its like Friday the 13th from the future. Every other terminator film dropped the horror-like mechanic, perhaps because you can only do it so much

The movie itself wasn't great but I've liked Gabriel Luna ever since his Robbie Reyes/Ghost Rider in Agents of SHIELD and he was pretty good in Dark Fate.
