I seem to recall him specifically stating this would definitely be a shorter one, unless I'm mistaken.

I now assume it's 6 hours long because of this dude who unpledged from his Patreon he's talking about.

I believe he has said that each video would be shorter and/or less weird and has basically lied every time

I finished it. Very fascinating stuff, lots of good observations about video games.

I'm almost interested in playing the game (if it had a translation), but it sounds like he didn't really love the game until he invested many playthroughs, and I definitely don't have enough interest for that (even if it had a translation).

I will say that it is his most repetitive review by far (and that's saying something!). I bet on average, each sentence in the review re-appears verbatim about 3 times. Several sentences are repeated like 7 times. The library of congress joke is in there, like, six times, right?

The "point" and "bottom line" sections took hours to dance around a pretty simple "point" and "bottom line", almost being a satire of the names "point" and "bottom line".

The use of the doom shotgun sound effect, did not get old, however.

The "let's play" parts were very good and worth watching.

The best takeaways were probably the Suda story or the references to IGA.

So does he just really need an editor? Lol maybe it would help with the length of these.

Well, I do enjoy the length of the videos, generally! I find Tim so fun to listen to, and the style of the videos, is just so cool. There must be so much work put in already to polish these up to their shine.

But I think what kept happening in this particular video is, whenever he wanted to make a point that needed several pieces of supporting evidence: he then felt the need to remind the viewer of each piece of supporting evidence, in case they forgot some of it--because some of the evidence was last mentioned several hours ago, so it feels weird to connect back to it after it has been so long!! So he'd re-explain things again.

So yeah, I dunno what the solution is, but the repetition was definitely noticeable, I thought.

One solution might be to visually organize the evidence into bullet points or something, so rather than re-explaining stuff, the bullets just re-appear on screen. Or something. Or maybe that's already happening, I don't remmber.

Or maybe he just enjoys making really long reviews, but to make sure the important stories and observations aren't lost among the length, they _have_ to be repeated, to be remembered.

tim rogers is a sometimes funny but mostly weird video game developer/journalist. he used to make videos for kotaku.

this video is about tokimeki memorial, which I had always heard of as the ur-dating sim, but this video shows how truly influential it is in other genres too.

some people dislike/don't feel like investing into his schtick, but I find his videos simultaneously entertaining and relaxing in a unique way.

I dont mean this at all as an insult but I wouldn't be surprised if its modded and I'm sorry if someone takes offense...

His videos have struck me as someone with high functioning autism/aspergers figuring out he can make a living talking about games and this is the result. Some people are into it but I find the videos very drawn out to an extreme detriment

No exaggeration that this is his most important video by far. Tokimeki is the most influential video game that the West knows absolutely nothing about or assumes they know about because theyve played a few visual novels, completely misunderstanding that this game is a different beast entirely

I'm very interested in Tokimeki Memorial, but have always been extremely put off by Tim Rogers' endless off-topic rambling and general lack of any kind of script editing. Is this video actually six hours about Tokimeki Memorial or is it another "haha he barely talked about the thing he's reviewing, this is ART" sort of thing?

I would say most of his reviews do focus on the game. I think DOOM and Pac-Man are outliers since everyone has talked them to death and so a fresh, new perspective was needed on them, and there's still some solid analysis of the games themselves there too, don't get me wrong.

It is not. He has a tendency to go on tangents about his personal life and things like that, but he does talk about the games he reviews.

The Tim Rogers rambling is good because its so unique to Tim Rogers.

Theres plenty of other people who can give you just pure analysis, only Tim will also tell you precisely what he was doing and thinking on random dates 20+ years ago.

I'm very disappointed that all of Tim's stuff post-Kotaku has been these overly-long review videos. I don't know why that is. Kotaku gave him free reign to make whatever videos he wanted, and there was a huge variety of different content. Now obviously the videos were never going to be the exact same since he doesn't have a production crew or coworkers, and COVID has messed up a lot. It's still weird that he completely stopped making any sort of shorter, goofier, or improvisational videos. I don't know if its an obligation to his patreon supporters or what, but it's the exact opposite of what I like from Tim Rogers.

I dunno, I feel like if you just took any 20 minute chunk of his new content, it's the same style as his old content.

Now he's just making more of it.
