Is that why the genre is not popular?

I would never play a horror game personally

I like games that are the opposite of horror

Horror is actually gaining a lot of traction. Even in the novel market right now, horror is on the rise. Fantasy is also high.

The main reason, much like sci-fi, is that bad horror is REALLY bad. It takes a really good writer, director, etc. to pull off a good horror story. A lot of the time it's full of cliches, characters behaving dumb to drive plot, etc.

Then there's the factor that some people just want to be entertained and are frightened easily by the thoughts of going to "experience" something that they'd rather not. That's where the art versus entertainment factor comes in to play.
