Do you think it's weird that a 15 y/o kid flies 700 miles to meet online gamers during this pandemic?

15 y/o Trey Thompson, a Geek from Alabama has been playing with group of 10 teen Geeks his age for 4 YEARS but has NEVER met them except he knew they lived in Winchester, Virginia..

But finally the long wait is over as Trey wanted to meet his new online friends so he flew 700 MILES to meet them in person!!

He said it was a "surreal" experience since he's been wanting to visit Winchester for 2 years

Once they met, the 9 boys and one girl wore face masks due to COVID-19 (except during the picture) as the group hung out and played video games at several of their homes

They met through a game called ROCKET LEAGUE on twitch and began chatting and playing online with Lang Kulton, a 15 y/o sophoore at Handley High School. Lang then introduced him to the rest of his gamer friends and then made a Discord

Lang said it was "really cool" to finally meet Trey in person as he is particularly close to 16 y/o's Jake Burton and Campbell Walker

Jake says he's played online games with Trey for over 2000 HOURS in the past 4 years and have spent late nights talking and playing video games who says Trey has been always good ot talk to when he's "sad"

Jake says "A bond has definitely been created over the past 4 years"

Jake says meeting Trey was the highlight of his life and hasn't had many opportunities to spend face time with friends cause of the pandemic.

As for Trey, he said Campbell helped him through BREAKUPS to get him through it.

Campbell says "Trey showed me that relationships that you make on games can last a while. They can be just as real as meeting someone in real life. Gamig is just as much as a medium for social interaction as it is a medium for entertainment"

The group has now grown closer thanks to gaming which they say they will be gaming for LIFE and that it does a lot more good than bad..

Do you think it's weird that a 15 y/o kid flew 700 miles to meet 10 teens he met online?

Eh. I've never found it weird to want to meet folk online. Although it's never materialised for me due to reasons I'm not against it. However during these times I'd probably not risk it unless they are in my city or it's surrounding areas. Not so much the COVID issue but the rules are regulations we have in the UK.

I voted yes only because of the pandemic part. That's sorta bogus. But otherwise, who cares? Good for them.

I have internet-specific friends I'd meet IRL if it was feasible or convenient.

Eh. I've never found it weird to want to meet folk online.

Never been my thing either, and some of the people I've known online live under 2 hours away. One even offered to let me crash at his place during NYCC, but I wound up not finally going. I certainly wouldn't fly to meet somebody.

Then again, when my cousin only lived an hour away, I didn't visit his place once during the three or four years he lived there.
