That movie was awful. I remember it being all the rage when i was a kid. What was the hype about?

People either get it or they don't. No use explaining that flick to anyone.

What? You should be able to objectively tell me why a movie is good? Is it writing? The way it's shot? The ambiance?

saying things like that is that it's a movie that's not good but people are pretending is because they want to fit in.

I know so many people who didn't "get" the ending.

It wasn't though.

Maybe not but it was the first one to actually nail the formula. Stuff like Cannibal Holocaust has high enough production values to not be convincing and The Last Broadcast just doesn't get what's going for right.

Anyway op, as an above post said, it either hits you right in the sweet spot or it doesn't. I find it pretty scary in how panicked and claustrophobic it feels. The handheld camera POV makes the situation of being hopelessly lost in the woods feel a lot more real and personal, and the fact that what's going on is never explicitly laid out to you is both really spooky and also something that's totally lost from almost every piece of Blair Witch media that came after it.

If many people didnt get it and you cant explain it. Then its not a good ending

It's a movie of its time.

The marketing for it was genius. It made audiences unsure if the myth did exist and if the movie was real. This was in the 90s where barely anyone knew what a search engine was. The movie itself does an overall convincing job of being some weird ass tape of people who went missing. The movie was just something that was unseen to the mainstream before. It was the right movie at the right time.

But nowadays we see 'found footage' of horrifying shit that's real pretty regularly. So the impact and mystery of it isn't the same. I overall think the ending is still pretty memorable though.

It was popular mostly because of a massive marketing campaign and word of mouth. It also helped that found footage films had basically languished as a concept for a good number of years, with perhaps the last major one being Cannibal Holocaust in the 1980 (where there was public outcry because some people believed the actors died (which led to the director's arrest)... nowadays the outcry is over the cruelty to animals).

Even at the time I thought it was lousy.

It wasn't the renaissance, either. It made a lot of money on a low production budget (although the marketing budget was huge), which inspired a long-running fad. Most of the found footage films that came out right after were cheap cash-ins that weren't much better than Blair Witch, although eventually we started to see a bit of quality.

As others have said, it's a film that thrived off web 1.0 marketing. It would be much more difficult to effectively advertise a "real" movie like Blair Witch today.
