As far as I know, my family was probably about half farmers and half business owners.

Going back further, there were some rabbis and what not.

When Chinese tanks rolled into North Korea, sparking the Korean War, my grandpa on my dad's side got up and ran to South Korea where he had to start all over. I wouldn't be an American if he hadn't done that. Hell, I might've never been born if he hadn't done that.

Wow, so your dad would be in North Korea if he didn't escape?

My mom's side of the family was fishermen as long back as we know.

On my dad's side of the family, his father's family were farmers for generations. My grandmother is from Liverpool, her father was a firefighter. Beyond that, no idea.

Gotta get clever. For me, I found out some stuff through my grandparents, and was able to research more stuff online. For whatever reason, my family ended up being pretty well documented.

The easiest way is to ask your eldest relatives. If they have any names or birth years you can go online and do more research using those names. If you're lucky, they'll be on geni (a database) or something similar. You gotta get clever

I looked up 100+ year old census data a few months ago.

My dad's side were a trolley/bus driver (they switched to bus in the 50s) and the other worked at a mattress factory. The women were homemakers.

My moms side were farmers going back to the mid 1800s. Emigrated from Scotland to Kansas and Nebraska and eventually settled in Canada.

I know my great grandfather on my mom's side was a coal miner that had to deal with the company store and all that trash. My grandpa was a steel worker.

On my dad's side, my grandpa was a high up manager that worked for Heinz. Think they wanted him to be VP, but he refused since they never stuck around long. I don't know about what his dad did or anything, though.

I just found out there's a good chance one of my ancestors is Joseph Oppenheimer, who's family had a net worth of around $7 Billion (the equivalent) in the 1700s. He was the economic adviser to a prince at the time and passed radical economic legislation, as well as own salt and silk monopolies. He also founded the first bank in Southern Germany and started industrialization.

I really want to be related to him, I just have to find out if the Oppenheimer in my family (who was in Frankfurt in the 1700s) is from the same Oppenheimer family as theirs (who were also in Frankfurt in the 1700s). Not to mention, it was the Jewish Ghetto where families weren't allowed to come and go. That would mean there's a pretty good chance it's the same family? Right? Right??

Having recently gone through my dad's side of the family on Ancestry:

Paternal: Teaching. There is a crazy amount of teachers in that side of the family tree for some reason, and both of my parents were as well.

Maternal: Poor tobacco farmers descended from merchants and politicians. The furthest I went back I found this guy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Bowdoin

My grandpa on my moms side was a doctor in Egypt. He had the kindest heart though, he would serve poorer areas and often didnt even take payment if they couldnt pay. Hed trade for things like fruit or chickens. He married my grandma who was 15 years younger when she was 17 and a mostly arranged marriage. My grandma had no education but they grew to love one another a lot. He gave her control of the finances and she invested in a lot of properties, managed everything on her own and grew their wealth.

Grandpa on my dads side was a captain of the Suez Canal. Divorced my grandma very early on when my dad and his brother were toddlers, and had several marriages after. My grandma never really recovered.

Beyond that, my ancestors built pyramids and shit.
