Something I've wondered about over the past decade. Why does the gaming community, almost as a whole, place New Vegas in like this god-tier ranking?

Am I the only one who liked Fallout 3 more than New Vegas? Don't get me wrong, New Vegas was a great game, and I played through it multiple times, but I thought the Capital Wasteland was a much more appealing setting than the Mojave. I also feel the story and lore was weaker in New Vegas than Fallout 3, maybe even 4 (only played through that game once though, so my expertise is not as high).

New Vegas felt like a glorified expansion to Fallout 3, rather than being a brand new game.

Yet everywhere I see, read, or watch about it, it is treated as if it were Jesus' second coming. You can't criticise the game for fear of becoming an outcast or having a bunch of people flame you for it.

Just curious what everyone else thought on the matter. Am I missing something to that game's almost cult reception?

Well your spot on already that was the general consensus at launch new Vegas did seem like a expansion pack riddled with bugs at launch. I'd say the same thing happened to new Vegas which recently happened with the witcher 3 over time the game just gathered a following and in retrospect of other games in the genre made these games appreciate on value.

It's always tough for me to decide between FO3 and NV

I dig EVERYTHING about NV except the location and the areas found within it - I felt like it was such a juicy steak with hardly any meat to keep you satiated

FO3 on the other hand has exactly what I wanted out of FO+Oblivion which was this wasteland adventure game taking place in a desolate land

I really didn't mind the city of New Vegas (I loved this!) - I just wanted MORE

I didn't mind the prison either in NV - I just wanted MORE

I didn't mind the evergreen hills up where you meet that Nightkin lady - but again, I just wanted MORE

Really - how do you have such a staple of the game (Super Mutants) be this throwaway piece, ESPECIALLY in a Fallout game?

I was so interested by the Khans playing the game but they ended up almost coming off as this joke thing slapped on in some corner of the map.. I know that was entirely FO3, but at least it made sense they were slapped on here. There's no reasons why all these cool groups and factions were consolidated to this tiny ass locations with no depth to them (the locations, not the choices that happen by getting involved) >_>

Everything builds up to getting to Mr. House and then it's just all forgettable <_<

Because of the same reason Oblivion is regarded well
It was for the most part, a new genre people without PCs never really experienced before.
New Vegas is actually a pretty bad game when you look at it from multiple angles. The story is rushed. It's railroaded designed at the first few hours. It was always going to be unfinished since Obsidian can't use selfcontrol. Combat was more or less ignored.

They tried to implement the idea of an isometric RPG into a 3D engine and it failed badly because the engine doesn't translate well.

NV was like 3 and more. I had tons of fun with 3, but NV is even better for the most part. The Capital Wasteland has a vibe that NV doesn't. Gameplay wise, NV is a step up in just about everything.

Good writing, interesting companions, actual RPG mechanics, various factions you could join, kill, ignore etc. Story changes depending on what you did, better following of the lore of Fallout.

It definitely had/has its issues which do get readily ignored. Admittedly now the bugs/crashes aren't really an issue (anymore so than anything built on Bethesda's engine) once you've got some basic mods installed on PC and you should be installing the bug fix mods anyway on any games on their engines if you can.

The writing and quest design makes Bethesda look like a joke in comparison. Reminder that in FO3's original ending, a literal Super Mutant (who's immune to radiation mind you) refuses to activate Project Purity because... "destiny"?

Not sure. I played like 20 hours of it and it kinda struck me as another really long open world game. I'm not big on those in general but some friends convinced me that it was perfect.

It still kills me that the game doesn't give you the option to yell the code to Fawkes when he's in the chamber and then treats you as selfish for sending in the one person who's guaranteed to survive the radiation, especially after he readily agrees with you that he was the best choice to go in.

New Vegas came out during a pretty awful time for wrpg writing and gameplay. 2000s Bioware and Bethesda were on top of the world and to get anything with a sembalance of depth or narrative you had to mostly look in really obscure eastern european places and play games with shoestring budgets that may or may not break and explode at any given time.

New Vegas isn't as amazing as people like to hold it up as, but it's written a head above every big budget rpg at the time, The gameplay was at its core Fallout 3 drek, yes, but the world was structured a lot better than that game and comparatively not crammed to the brim with three hundred caves and office buildings filled with boring enemies, pots and pans and bottles of glue. It still had elements of inventiveness and creativity to it, even if they were running on fumes compared to the genre's high times in the 90s.

I didn't understand the massive boner New Vegas receives, hence why I made this topic. But yes, I think Fallout 3 is the superior game. I didn't care about a lot of things that happened in New Vegas, and I thought the Capital Wasteland was much more gritty, post-apocalyptic setting than the Mojave.

Your choices in the vast majority of the content in NV actually effecting the game world in some capacity. Along with multiple ways to reach solutions to a problem. Much better written. At this point it has more mods too lol. NV though has the issue of giving you way too many skill points/not forcing a Logans Loophole cockblock to skillpoints on the player so that they have to actually specialize in some capacity, instead of being a master-at-all by the end of the game.
