Was watching videos on my phone, so didn't have adblocker, & came across an "ad" that was +30:00. I watched quite a lot of it to see how... legit it was, & after about 20 minutes, decided to finally hit the skip button. It's very much an entire video, disguised as an ad. That seems HIGHLY open for potential exploitation.

The ad in question is for some psychology dating system called The Desire System for those curious, but the thing I want to discuss here, is that someone has managed to stealth an entire video presentation as an ad.

How's it any different then the 30 minute ads on TV. Infomercials I think they're generally called.

No they don't, and this kind of shit happens frequently

I finally installed adblock a few months ago because of Youtube's shenanigans of infinitely long ads and breaks in inappropriate spots for a break every two minutes.

30 minute infomercials don't appear in the middle of your 20 minute TV show.

I can only watch YouTube on my PC for that reason. Installing ublock is pretty much necessary to watch YouTube. And this was before they started putting ads in the middle of videos.

Well, you can't just inject those into other shows. This is a potential method to insert extended messages into more popular content, especially if the practice for Youtube's ad skip function were to change. With Youtube's ad system, you basically gain access to the ENTIRE Youtube viewership.

For the record, content creators have control over where ads are placed in their videos. Although they can't directly control how long the ads are. Also not manually placing the midrolls causes them to get placed automatically where the algorithm thinks a good break point is (if you turn them on, anyway). Personally I put a maximum of one ad every 10 minutes on my videos, and only if there's a good break point.

Came in to post this. I don't remember the video itself but the ad was the entire Lego movie.

There was some BS a few months ago where they started retroactively putting midrolls on everybody's previous videos automatically unless they specifically opted-out of it, and some people were reporting still having them added despite opting out

I've seen one particular "ad" in the middle of a 20 minute video that was a trailer for a show followed by the whole 48 minute long first episode. The ad in total was 52 minutes. Option to skip was only after 3:30, which was when the trailer ended and the show began.

At least you can skip. I hate mandatory ads, even if it just 5 seconds.

Skippable and non-skippable ads are also creator-controlled options. Specifically whether or not they're allowed to appear, but when and how often they appear relative to each other is random (favoring skippable). I only turn on non-skippables for videos that are over 30 minutes long.

Holy crap. I just uploaded some videos overnight to edit in the morning, and it auto-placed like 7 or 8 ads in a half-hour episode. It's no wonder people use adblock (myself included).

I actually saw an ad with the icon showing full on nipples of a woman. Didnt really understand how ads like that could be allowed. It's not the first time either.

I've seen people report those to Team Youtube on Twitter, and they get addressed promptly. I guess it's like GameFAQs mobile where they don't want those ads, but have no control over preemptively filtering them.
