idk why that made me sad.

Sounds like something between resentment and resignation, as though she believes she lacks the ability to get you a good gift, so there's no point in her trying. You can give a thoughtful gift without spending a lot of money, and you probably know that, and it's a reasonable assumption that she knows that too, so for her to take that stance, is understandably sad.

At least that's my take. I don't know you, or your mother, so only you would be able to tell if I'm anywhere near the mark on this one.

Don't feel bad. She's the one that decided not to put any thought or love into the activity of choosing a gift. She chose to get you more money, something that she knows you have plenty of.

Dont be sad, mums tend to say silly stuff like this when they feel bad that they havent got you something as nice as you have. Not because they think their gift was shit, but because they feel guilty that you got them something so nice.

my mum was just like why did you get this? We dont deserve this. Just a parent thing to say when theyre overwhelmed by nice stuff, dont take it to heart turts

Aw. Some people use gift giving as a love language and maybe she feels it's inadequate. Maybe just try to reassure her so she knows you appreciate what she gives you.

My sister says this about my niece and nephews. Although not a parent myself my niece and nephews are the next best thing and I want them to do better then me and have what I never had too. So far so good.

makes sense! Both my parents were blue collar workers and it's 7 of us so needless to say we didn't come from money. Far from it and our needs always came before our wants and with 7 mouths to feed etc, we didn't go out to eat often, we shared toys etc so yeah most parents want their kids to do better.
