I finally finished it for the first time a few months back. I tried 3 or so times before but always lost interest pretty quick.

It's not a bad game but it's not that great. Downpour was a lot better.

nope. i know the combat was always terrible in the silent hill franchise, but homecoming's is just abysmal and makes the whole game such a goddamn chore. that's not even getting into the lackluster characters.

downpour is a better game, overall.

Homecoming was a decent game. It didn't necessarily feel like a Silent Hill game, but it was still decent and creepy. And for me at least it was much better than Downpour.

Id say homecoming. Downpour wasnt really scary and felt more like a tps adventure game

People complain about the gameplay, but it's just Silent Hill with polished combat. First Silent Hill game had you using the sidestep buttons to dodge lightning buttons. It's not too unrealistic for someone to be able to dodge a slash attack when Harry Mason dodged lightning.

Same, I beat Home Coming since I didn't beat Silent Hill 3 or 4 and felt like this was a good ending to the series for me.

I don't think I'll play another Silent Hill game unless Konomi remakes the original true to form like a Resident Evil Remake.

I disagree with everything else being "terrible to mediocre".

The story of the game was nothing to brag about. But it was enjoyable and it held some weight to it. The characters were all tragic and it really hit the theme of doom and gloom very well. The choices you make are pretty simple, but it lets you decide your backstory well enough.

Speaking of the tragic characters, there is a lot of really depressing things you see through this game. Especially through the side quests. From a man who had his kid raped and murdered, so he seeks revenge. Crooked prison officers trying to kill their own. Poor families losing all of their most treasured possessions to a thief. A mentally ill woman that was being spied on, but nobody believed her. And a woman that could not handle the burden of having an autistic child, so she caused the kid to commit suicide.

And there are more than that, which you can read into. This is one of the most bleak SH games to date. It focuses a lot on the details. Each side quest tells its own story, and you can easily get sucked into it. I spent probably 20 hours in this game just exploring and checking out the back story of these quests. One of the coolest things about these was trying to figure out which time period all these tragic events happened. Its like the horror of these events leave a lingering imprint of the city, and they will continue to do so until they are "made right".

The combat of the game is one of the things i hear people hate the most. SH has never been known for its awesome combat. From the very beginning, its been clunky at best. I can see why they put in the breakable weapons (just like origins did), so the entire game doesnt boil down to circle strafing every enemy and whacking it to death with a pipe. It makes you choose what you are going to use your resources on, and when a pack of enemies get thrown at you, you have to pick a couple off and dodge the rest. You will end up with plenty of weapons to make it through if you dont decide to kill everything in your path.

The music and score along with the sound effects is top notch as always. I know a lot of people hated the Korn theme, but thats on a personal preference level. If it is the thing holding up a port or remaster, thats fucking stupid and annoying. But the voice acting is, IMO some of the best a SH game has to offer. Coming off the stilted VA in 2 and 3 it is a very surprising thing to see. Downpour characters show a lot of emotion and really put their heart into it.

I could go on for days about how much I love it, but I can see why people may not rank it in their top SH games. I personally love it to death and will defend it every chance I get. I recommend that everyone who has access to it to give it a try and not listen to the haters that say its godawful and not worth a play through.

Homecomings combat is awful as the enemies have no pattern or more importantly tells for attacks so you just have to guess if you need to block or attack.

at Flauros - yea, the story is bleak, but that doesn't mean that there's necessarily much depth to it.

it's like, people saw how well-regarded Silent Hill 2 was, with its theme of self-punishment, and felt like it should be implanted in further installments, and that's why you see it in Downpour and Homecoming.

IMO, it all felt derivative.

the gameplay, performance, enemies, Other World, etc., were terrible.

My problem with Downpour was that the entire game seemed underwhelming. The side quests were good if you got into them, but everything else in the game from the characters, plot, and combat was mediocre. I only played it once and that was years ago, so I can't give any specifics. But that is how I remember it.

Homecoming didn't feel like a traditional Silent Hill game with the combat changes. But everything else about it felt Silent Hill-ish and it was super creepy.

I hated Homecoming, and honestly remember next to nothing about it other than the "plot twist" at the end.

Downpour had major gameplay issues, but overall I enjoyed it a lot. Murphy's probably my third favorite SH protagonist, right after James and Heather.
