I never tried this, but does seem to work. I indeed do sound like an idiot in my head while biting my tongue.

it happens to me, but i question if my mind is creating the sounds to fit the narrative, ok?

i believe the principle effect is somewhat similar to schizophrenia, where the vocal tract is active during usage, ok?

it's a bizarre experience for sure, leaving lingering questions, like why, ok?

I never know how to talk about how I think, but I feel I might be one of those people without an inner monologue

Maybe your brain just doesn't have the processing power to focus on thinking and biting your tongue at the same time

try doing it, it's a simple process once you start, ok?

maybe start an internal dialogue were you speak to yourself over something trivial, like what's for lunch, ok?

I don't do this with my tongue but I do sort of breathe it out.

I hear voices in my head
They council me, they understand
They talk to me

Not just in my head, but aloud, too. I do it without really thinking, honestly, and it is pretty worrying. Part of me thinks it is due to being alone with no one to talk to for days, perhaps weeks at a time. I feel like I talk to myself more often nowadays to compensate for the lack of actual people to converse with. It is a bad, unhealthy habit of mine, I confess. I also have this inexorable tendency to relive the past in my head, because I have not actually had anyone to talk to in-person for over a year, now. When I am around others, they think I am talking to them when I am talking to myself. This never works in my favor, since I always have a tendency to either criticize myself harshly or relive terrible events in my life that have caused me much anguish. Anybody around me would think I'd be taking figurative shots at them or else muttering insults and verbal attacks at them for seemingly no reason. Worse yet, I would unknowingly hurt their feelings if I said something nasty. There is simply too much wrong with me.

Its just a mind trick. If you have strong self control you can override it, so to speak.

Its just your head sounding the way you THINK it should sound.

Somewhat related: some meditation techniques actually teach us to ignore physiological perceptions in favor of mental intentions.
to apply that here, just because youre biting your tongue and you should sound weird, doesnt mean you have to.
Its like learning muscle control for your brain.

Yes of course. Its how problem solving, situational awareness, split second decision making, and contingency plans are devised. Even for seemingly minute things.
However these basic foundations for intelligence are absent in many people.

But...I don't need to use language in my own head. Language is a translation of my thoughts. I do all these things but I have no need to translate the source material as nobody else is exposed to it.

this, it's a really helpful attribute when it comes to quick choices, be it in writing or even acting.

I don't know about that, but just the concept of how things sound in my head in general is interesting to me. Like you can "hear" words you read/think about, but I couldn't begin to describe what "voice" they're in, if there even is one at all.

I wonder also how that works for lifelong deaf people. How do you even teach someone the sounds of words and letters without vocalizing them, let alone how does somebody with no concept of hearing understand them?

the voice is likely whatever they believe it sounds like, ok?

i doubt it sounds like what we hear them sounding like when they speak aloud, ok?
