Or have things eased off and now more people are accepting that faith in deities and the bad behavior/practices that ends up spurring is not excused from criticism?

Trilbys and fedoras are two different hats, people just got the name wrong and it stuck.
Fedoras are wider brimmed and don't curve up in the back.

Depends on how edgy you're being about it.

Nah, you still get the fedorabeard types that see some extreme religious nutjobs and jump to stereotyping billions of people all as unenlightened idiots believing in 'sky fairies' etc, and they've kinda influenced their own stereotypical image of atheism in response. These people like to see the extreme of the opposite side cause that's easier to ignore.

But legitimate skepticism, without the subtext of 'I'm right and you're wrong/stupid', is fine for most people.

Sweaty neckbeards who think of themselves as cool like to take fashion advice from badasses.

Stuff like trench coats/dusters, fedoras, katanas, etc... depending on what kind of cool guy's style they're trying to ape.

Unfortunately, they aren't cool enough to pull it off and just end up looking fucking ridiculous.

Depends?

Did you do 1 or more these things

  1. Say it because God was brought up in even the most passing of comments or try to swing an existing conversation to God/religion to shout your views?
  2. Say it to a religious person just to piss them off or in a context where debate/arguement really is a bad idea/inappropriate(Funeral for example)
  3. Deliberately disrupt a largely religious groups services/religious activity or religious groups(this includes if your family does a prayer at gatherings and such)
  4. Were you being overly generalistic, rude, tactless, smug, abrasive, racist, edgy, or aggressively nihilistic etc.?

Religion is a very delicate subject to many people and if you can't express said cynicism in an articulate way, you don't really deserve a soap box to stand on.

Bashing religion in an unreasonable manner isn't going to make your atheistic or agnostic views any more reasonable. And even if you are unbiased and fair about your argument, at what point does it stop becoming an argument and start becoming a conversion?

I think all internet atheists are guilty of this at some point.

It's insane to me to think that simply because lots of people believe something, it's edgy to disagree.

At one point everyone on earth believed the world was flat and they were wrong.

The problems with religion are countless. From indoctrination of children to not paying taxes on the ungodly amount of money they take in. Why? Because they believe something?

I'm just not willing to tip-toe around the fact that all of this stuff is nonsense.

I agree but I find it depressing. Something about the knowledge that a) my mother is very likely dead and gone forever and that's the end of it and b) that's my fate too has me kind of disheartened. The notion that consciousness can persist after death gives hope and the idea that life has meaning. My mother was a woman of strong faith (not the most pleasant or reasonable about it but she had conviction, let it be said) and the fact I don't share that has created a sense of detachment and nihilism I wish I could take back in some ways.

Make your own meaning with the time you have and appreciate the lives lived, not the lives lost.

That's easier said than done.

See this is a prime example - it's a 'fact' that it's nonsense, he cannot bring himself to ignore anyone believing something different because he is definitely right about this. No other reasoning than because some churches don't pay taxes. This is the sort of thing people will dismiss as edgy the same way they'll dismiss overtly devout religious people who won't hear that they could possibly be wrong.

I mean reality's probably a computer simulation if that helps, so it's quite possible that theists and atheists are both wrong about death, afterlifes, consciousness etc. There's some comfort to take in agnosticism really, knowing that you don't really know.

I always felt that Neckbeards or Edgelords are anti religious because they think God is working against them.

Like "God made me fat and sweaty and makes me buy shitty unmatched clothing that don't go together"...."so screw religion".

I also wonder if other religions have Neckbeards or Edgelords or is it only against Christianity?

I mean does Islam or Hindu have Neckbeard and Edgelord critics?

Atheist is atheist, once you get there all religion is a joke in your eyes. I'm sure some receive more criticism than others, but at least in my experience Christianity does seem to have the loudest critics. Personally I think that's an "american atheist" thing, our people go from zero to loudmouth asshole edgecuck pretty fucking quick.

I'm agnostic, dont believe but I recognize the value and good religion can bring to the world and the peace/structure it gives some people. I'll also be the first to tell and edgy angstheist to shut the fuck up lol. Let people believe what they want, if they're not preaching or practicing hate then who cares?

Not to say he's definitely wrong either, or that the entirety of his individual beliefs can be inferred from one post on gamefaqs.com, just that that's the impression some people will get from it.

A couple quick points:

I have way more than two reasons to think it's nonsense.

When I say "nonsense" I'm talking about bible claims. The facts that we know about the natural world demonstrate clearly that they're wrong.

When it comes to gods, I would never say for a fact that there are no gods.

I'm also very open to listening to reason. However, it isn't very often that the religious employ reason. If you aren't interested in using logic and reason then I'm not interested in listening. At that point you remove yourself from the discussion.

It's usually the anti-theist attitude that gives off the "edgy and rebel" tone that gets you called a fedora neckbeard. Just share your opinion in a way that doesn't sound like you're preaching like those annoying ass priests (basically don't be a prick) and you won't get called that.
