So I have a project coming up next week that involves drilling holes in old hard drives to destroy the data. They didn't give me any specifics on how they want me to do this, what size holes to drill, or what kind of bit to use.

I figure I'd use an A/C powered electric drill, since they have tons more power than any battery drill. But what size and type of bit would be best? I figure a large bit would be less likely to break and could handle the heat better than a small one, plus it would be more effective at destroying the drive. What bit material would be best for drilling through metal? If the platters are glass or ceramic, as many newer drives are, drilling will probably shatter them, so the main thing will be drilling through the thin cover. But if the drives are older, they'll likely be aluminum.

Yeah I personally dont like drills, or any tool that plugs-in. Either an 18w or a 20w DeWalt will do.

The bit depends on the size of the hole you need. Not sure what youre drilling so I cant help you there. Any material bit will do.

Id personally take them out back with a shotgun, but thats just me.

If it's for destruction then any bit larger than 0 will do... though there is a chance that a 3 foot bit will just make it spin.
