I used to come on here back in like 96/97 and print off guides because we only had like 26.6k dialup that cost per minute and tied the phone up.

Should have downloaded it instead but I was like 6 years old and didn't get how that worked.
I used to print guides too, lol. I went to the library to do it though since I didn't have a printer at home. It was 10 cents a page.

I don't know which is the earliest. My uncle used to do website designs for local businesses so I remember a lot of his work (he was also a fan of embedding MIDI versions of older songs on the sites lol).

Remember my brother using outlook express on windows 95 and we had a color printer and printed out Space Ghost characters for fun

Exactly all of this haha.

Garamond font, 4 columns FTW!

And yes, it was mostly DBZ x LP AMVs back in the day. I remember some of them had footage from the movies instead of the regular anime. My mind was blown sometimes. Good fucking times.

I used to go to the library everyday after school and print out guides from GameFAQs. One time I got in trouble for looking at sexy pictures of video game girls (namely Aya Brea from Parasite Eve). Then we got AOL dialup and I remember it took like 30 minutes to download one song. I also used to create crappy GeoCities websites.

Having an AOL Kids account haha.

lol. i was going to mention something off of ANT. i think it was playing final fantasy extreme (chatroom battler) with an old friend of mine. red if you ever see this you're still a legend.

i remember AOL had a bug where if you trying to use the chatroom sounds and you put con/con into the file path it would cause people to bluescreen.

actually, time for a quick shoutout.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxtYFoU2jGY

the dan mentioned in one of the song titles was a friend of mine. the song is called 'tales from the rejectopsy' because his band was called dissectopsy. he had been trying to pass off a circle of dead children song as being from his band. i remember, because he shared it with me and the song data told me everything.

zombie sneak attack is a relic of old internet metal forums. i think they formed out of a bunch of board members collaborating.

My father started his career as a programmer so I had my own computer before it was even all that common for people to have a household computer they shared with the family. I know that I was online a couple of years before this, but the earliest thing I can remember at the moment is using hacks to win a tournament in the "legit" guild I was in on Diablo 1, so that would have been mid 97ish. My warrior threw so many fireballs.

Second thing that stands out is the release of Ultima Online. My first trip outside of town was to spend a whole afternoon finding a mine and then gathering ore and things to sell...and on the way back I came across a guy who had spent his time learning magic and then parking at a bridge to kill people as they come across it loaded down with shit to sell in town. Not that I'm still bitter about that piece of shit or anything. That would have been a little later in 97.

nice. I was going to make a similar post about a game called Archmage.

i still can't believe these kinds of games haven't had a resurgence as phone apps, instead of the ones where you can never win or lose.

i guess you could actually mute that. i was a foregone conclusion; i had always been terrible at sleeping at night. the worst thing to me was people using the stupid phone. i was doing important things on ANT.

Being introduced to computers in school at a very young age and being taught what the internet was. I remember the teacher saying something to the effect of "There's a website for everything. Anything you can think of, will have a website."

And my innocent little brain the first thing I thought of was "So you mean to tell me I could go to frog.com and it would be there."

Now, actually visiting the site 20 some years later...

Omg, it was a meme the whole time.
