Personally I think the late 90s and early to mid 00s were the best. A lot less commercialism, lots of services free such as yahoo games.

Now days its all subscriptions or what have you. It doesn't hold the joy for me it used to.

I think it's worse. Obviously the technological improvements and access to information are great. But internet culture as a whole I believe had become more toxic. It was bad back in the day, but it was almost entirely limited to the internet. It didn't really bleed over into your life. Now doxxing is commonplace and whatever happens has a very good chance of affecting your offline life.

The problem with social media is that they trust the public to be decent to each other and behave themselves with no real consequences to being an asshole

Fuck no we're not. The internet was always better before social media and big tech. Facebook and google should never have grown to become what they are now. Now we have Amazon, another company trying to funnel everyone into their little internet ecosystem. I hate all of it.

Early 2000s is probably best, but you cant ignore streaming services + YouTube from today, where you can basically watch any movie / show or listen to any song anytime you want.

if you wanted to do that in the early 2000s, youd have to download them off Kazaa or Limewire, but theyd take forever to download

Like with most things. When they become popular they lose something.

I think the "flash period" will have been an important formative period in the net.
