I think this guy figured it out.

tl;dw version: theres too many variables for 1990. You had to have Final Fantasy when it released (contest ended Oct 15 1990). This is the first FF. It wasnt even remotely popular. The RPG scene isnt what it is today. You had to have a Nintendo Power AND be actively looking for this enemy in the game. Said enemy appears on one screen over a short bridge. You can play thru the game without encountering it, easily.

You had to borrow your parents camera, get a readable picture from a CRTV and likely didnt turn the flash off. Oh also: your parents had to get the roll developed BEFORE the deadline. (How many albums do you remember being a few vacations???).

Nobody won the damn contest. Too short of a time frame in 60 days with a cryptic enemy in a cryptic spot you can only encounter in one location which you can never return to. No internet. Have to love RPGs before they were popular.
