After a year of "if you go out you're killing your and my grandparents" it IS a bit weird that they're being pushed to the back of the line now that there's a vaccine.

Prioritize those most at risk. Isn't that the ethical thing to do?

i would say the right wing position is to first vaccinate the people who produce the most $ over the people who are most likely to die, but ok.

Yes, the most at risk are the people who still have to work because others (such as retired seniors) still need groceries, utilities, education, and entertainment.

In a pandemic filled with grim statistics, one of the grimmest has gone largely unnoticed: 95 percent of COVID-19 deaths in the U.S. have occurred among people who were 50 or older. This even though the majority of coronavirus cases have been reported in people under age 50.

I agree that they need to be protected, but vaccinating the frontline workers first means they're less likely to be carriers, no?

Retired folks stay at home all day (or at least they should be), so how are they getting the illness in the first place? Either they're going out in public and/or ignoring mask mandates, hygiene, and social distancing; or they're getting it from their kids, grandkids, etc. We live in an era of ecommerce, mass delivery, and instant entertainment and communication. Those who are at the greatest risk of dying from the disease should not be putting themselves (or themselves be put in) situations where they can contract it.

Granted there are people over 50 who are still working and they are especially at risk, but if they're essential workers then they'll get vaccinated anyway.

So yes, I believe that we should be distributing it first to the people most likely to catch and spread it. If we vaccinate them first, elderly folks will be less likely to contract it from those sources.

If I'm wrong and one can still be a carrier/spreader with the vaccine, then I'll reconsider my position.

Nobody is arguing that it is essential, but it is, legally, deemed essential and so those workers are forced to face this risk. How do you not get this?

They are most at risk of catching it not most are risk of dying from it. It is basic triage to protect those most vulnerable. It also keeps hospital capacity down since healthy liquor store workers are more likely to be able to survive without hospitalization. It's better for everyone to give it to the elderly first.

Its boils down to the question whether we should first vaccinate those that are most at risk of catching the disease vs those at risk dying from it. I side with the latter

Kinda interesting dilemma, I can see both arguments. Wonder which strategy would result in more "gains" (which we can interpret as less deaths for simplicity). I suspect the regardless of the answer, the strat they are going with would be the more economically beneficial

Vaccinating the elderly will objectively result in less deaths between the two options. See my links above.

Uhh pretty sure the CDC is saying to vaccinate healthcare workers and the elderly in long term facilities first, so...what's the problem? After that I think the next groups include essential workers, people over 65, and people with preexisting conditions.

Is this incorrect? Did it change? If not, what's Tulsi complaining about?

That's what we're doing up here. We're prioritizing high risk and frontline essential workers. That includes indigenous groups, the elderly, and frontline medical staff over a certain age. They are the first.

the elderly are most at risk of dying if they catch it. Making sure the essential workers theyre most usually in contact with dont give it to them in the first place feeds two birds with one scone.

It's drama from this article from a few days ago. The CDC has since come out saying elderly first.

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/12/05/health/covid-vaccine-first.html
Specifically it was this quote that kicked the drama off:
Harald Schmidt, an expert in ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania, said that it is reasonable to put essential workers ahead of older adults, given their risks, and that they are disproportionately minorities. Older populations are whiter, Dr. Schmidt said. Society is structured in a way that enables them to live longer. Instead of giving additional health benefits to those who already had more of them, we can start to level the playing field a bit.

Its up to each state to decide who should be vaccinated first and it shouldn't be based on who has the most political clout and it shouldn't be done stupidly. She has a point. A 22 year old with no health problems shouldn't be at the front of the line because their state decides that working at a gas station makes them 'essential'.
