Even small things like a dvd or a baseball bat or video game handheld box brings a lot back I wouldnt remember otherwise.

I wonder if having everything digital and pretty minimal would cause less memories to be remembered. Like selling things you dont need anymore, like a tee ball bat or getting rid of the three 3DS boxes I have here (3DS, lite, XL)

I wonder if having physical objects around prevents Alzheimers or creates a higher sense of self. Same with moving to different states instead of having a town full of memories you see all the time.

This is a bit of a tangent, but... Since the last decade, people have been documenting their lives more fully than ever before. It's now possible to have a day-by-day, and almost even hour-by-hour record of your life since birth.

In previous generations, memories were bound up in family snapshot albums in which you might find a photo of yourself taken maybe once every couple of years. My late parents took very few photos, and they ones they did take I treasure because they're rare glimpses into my childhood, like an isolated scene frozen in a flash of lightning. Now, there are kids growing up who'll probably have a complete record of their everyday life. I envy them for that.

I've read that sometimes we think we remember something but it was really constructed from a picture.

tbh, when I was much younger, I sometimes deliberately bound memories to objects. Now just thinking of the objects allow me to recall random memories, and it's the first thing to pop to mind regarding this subject. Granted, some of the detail fades with time.

I also just happened to watch a video that discussed the idea of recognition vs recall (ie, we see things and think we remember but we don't)
