If something is about to wipe your party and you're not underleveled there's been like 1 or 2 turn warnings about these things since like mid PS2 era, probably even earlier

Nerds think Turn Based combat is a lot more interesting than it actually is.

You spam your highest attack move.

Special attacks, summons or magic with large cast times are used to "spice things up" unless it's your highest attack move.

You use buffs and debuffs like 4 times in the entire game because trash mobs aren't worth it, and there's only a handful of bosses in the entire game that are weak to something. Even then you could just have used that turn to do a big boi damage move

It looks absolutely ridiculous "HIYAAAA!!" *awkwardly run back to the line and wait for your next turn*

Turn based works well in a system like Dungeons and Dragons where you have a billion things you can do on your turn, and by extension games like Balders Gate or Divinity Original Sin. Or games like X-Com or Final Fantasy Tactics where you can position your people around the map.

But other than that, it's an outdated form of combat that really exists because it's cheap and efficient to create "epic battles".

Now we can render and play the fuckin things in real time making Turn Based basically useless in most cases.

/rant.

Lmao I wonder how far you'll get in Wizardry 4 by doing that.

i've seen the argument made that systems that don't have to rely on player dexterity to pose challenge have the potential for a bit more depth to them.

like look at the extreme opposite end to that -- sniper battles in FPS games. it is an execution and dexterity test and barely anything more: there is little to no depth to it, outside of some mind games you might play. it's about getting a shot off faster and more accurately than the other guy. it's practically just a headclicking sim.

compare that to something like slay the spire where you have as much time as you want to interact and learn the systems of the game.

the specific examples you gave are set in JRPG terms and that's its own thing. JRPGs are progress sims. you're meant to beat them and you're meant to be sold the idea that you're getting stronger and that you're powerful -- until you get to the next area. the easy parts push you and the difficult parts pull you.
