yall gotta have a yard the size of kansas with at least a 6 foot fence and there has to be at least 2 people home at any given moment during the typical week and nobody in the household under the age of 25 and no other pet and you gotta get a weekly drug test and also a colonoscopy and then maybe they'll let you spend 5 minutes interacting with the dog before the shitty intern working the joint who has no intention of ever letting these animals actually find a fucking home because she's so attached is gonna tell you that you're "just not a good fit i feel :\"

Skip the petstores and shelters, and just get a pupper here:

Breeders stress a lot on their reputation and a lot goes into their puppies. They want owners who they feel will be beneficial to the upbringing on the pups and don't want irresponsible people caring for them.

i was talking about rescues but that's pretty fucking funny too

i seriously think anyone who works in the field of getting dogs to owners is probably emotionally unstable

it's true. have to pay 50$ for what my dog has done. as i didn't want to be a irresponsible owner when my dog got loose and caused a bruise on the other dog's leg.

my roommate didn't pay enough attention while outside it's why it happened.

tbf there are a lot of dog abusers out there.

and more than that people who get them and then proceed to abandon them when they get too much

but yeah op you also have a point that people super into dogs are often weird

Damn.. I got my dog because she was an "accident" (guy had a Malinois and found a pit wandering around a park, took it hike to care for it but it got pregnant and mines is one of the pups). I just paid for the shots and shit and now shes mine. I had no idea it could be that hard.

What kind of dog are you trying to get?

When my wife and I were looking to get a dog last year, we ran into a different issue with rescues. We live in an apartment so we wanted a small dog.

But anytime a shelter gets cute, small dogs in, they get scooped up by soccer moms and old ladies and other people without jobs ASAP because they just sit and wait for the new arrivals to get posted online.
Then the meeting process favors people without jobs as well because they tell you to come meet the dogs at like 11am on a weekday, and it's first come first serve.

We ended up giving up and just did a bunch of research to find a very reputable, family-run breeder. We ended up getting a great purebred doggie that was exactly what we needed for our lifestyle, and it ended up not costing much more than she adoption fees end up being.

There's free dogs just running around at the dog park, try there.

I have 37 dogs.

Maybe you should find another place to get a dog

some places are more lenient on the restrictions. the local shelter around here will only adopt out to people with fenced yards (if i had to try and get one if my older dog ever died i wouldn't have the chance to adopt from them).

they'll adopt a cat out to anyone provided it can be cared for properly.

Lots of folks are trying to adopt dogs this year due to covid. There's a ton of people who can't go out and do very much right now who are lonely. Most places here have a several month backlog to even have a shot of adopting a rescue. Breeders are cleaning up.

So what, if you have a kid you can't get a dog?
it's one of the most common stipulations of independent rescuers, yes, absolutely. they'll even ask if you *plan* to have kids and include clauses they warrant seizure of the dog if a child begins to reside in your household within x amount of years.

Wait...

You're joking.
they will also include clauses for "surprise home visits" to verify you haven't reneged on anything
