You take the latter because you melt them down and sell them for more than $500k because of the price of the metal.

Nickels.
Not only is face value greater but the melt value would be little under $1.2M.
$500k of dimes would only be worth less than $10k when melted.

Asking the real questions here.
Nickel's melting point is pretty high up there, yes. Not exactly practical for a basement foundry.
