Marius Els, who lived in the Free State province of South Africa was found dead in a river, having been bitten repeatedly by the animal.

Els, 40, had adopted the hippo, whom he had named "Humphrey," when it was found as a calf. Earlier this year footage of Els riding the more than 2,000-pound beast went viral.

Because they can afford to be, basically. They're practically invulnerable to most things around them once they're grown. Their skin is so thick that predators' claws and teeth have no effect. The only animals around them that can even injure them are elephants and other hippo's.

But their babies are a lot more vulnerable. And when your species pretty much only produces one baby per female every two years, you have a lot more reason to be extremely protective of said babies.

When I was a young'in, I had a Latin teacher.

He was the most fascist person I have ever met. I don't mean that in a wet napkin "oh, he doesn't believe what I believe" kind of way. He told a class of impressionable 13 year olds, that the best way to deal with civil unrest, disorder or any kind of dissent was,"pock, right between the eyes." I won't tell you where he was from, some may guess. There's a certain shift of the "a" and "e" there, though.

That said, he was the first person who (unintentionally) taught me that you could admire someone intellectually while thinking their politics were utter ****.

I digress.

He told us many stories of hippos mauling the **** out of people when he was growing up.To the point that it was almost a given if you went near a watercourse, waterhole or pond of any respectable size.

There comes a time when you need to let go of vicious animals like these regardless if you raised them since birth and he just didn't want to accept this and caught the hippo on a bad day and that was the end of it. Now they have to put the hippo down because it has had a taste of human blood and murdering humans. This could have easily been avoided if he wasn't delusional and just acknowledged the damage the animal is easily capable of and just didn't try to get too close to it once it became a threat.
