I don't "perceive" they've made non-arguments. They literally said "Wat" and "tc is a troll". Truly the epitome of nuanced discussion and absolutely not bored people trolling on the internet.

And I didn't respond to you because I mostly agree with what you said. I feel like we have a shared history in both South and North America, and a very similar culture in many aspects.

And if you are intent on saying "You are not American, you are South American", do you also say that to people from South Korea?
If I'm "South American", then I'm also, by definition, American.

Weird question, as far as I know, there is more kinship between the Koreas, than between the three parts of the Americas. Then again, I am not from anywhere in the Americas or the Koreas, so the reality could be very different from what I have observed.

Lol if you think south and north american culture are similar and share a common history. The cultures within north america are so heterogeneous even within the 3 countries that make it up. There is a different culture in pretty much every state within the US and Mexico and different culture in all the Canadian provinces. No wonder people think you are trolling, you don't even have basic geographic knowledge.

Serious response: Maybe you should do some travelling after the pandemic or watch some YouTube travel videos to get a better idea of why everyone in this topic is against you.

Geez, if there's a different culture in every state, why do you all collectively call yourselves "american"?
I don't need to justify my identity to you. I live in the Americas therefore I am american. The fact that your country appropriated the name "America" for itself is your own problem.

And you are the only one to think I'm trolling, so there you go~

Because we are the United States of America. That's the smart ass technical answer. The real answer is that's just how the world views the United States, because it is AFAIK the only country in the world to have the word "America" in it.

So if you have a problem with why you shouldn't call yourself American as a person from a South American country, maybe take it up with the rest of the world. Nobody is saying you can't, but it's not really logical to do so when you have something more specific to identity yourself with (your country or city).

But it doesn't seem like you want your mind opened on this forum where everyone is telling you the same thing.

Shit I fell for it :(

It's like arguing with someone why can't I just say 2+2+4-4 = 4 instead of just saying 2+2 = 4. Of course you can but that doesn't mean you should because it's just extra work to say additional information that no one cares or needs to know.

Do you need to add that you're asian when you're japanese? No, it's redundant, but it's still true, and no one has a problem with them saying it.

They could and no one would have problem with it except that years of war among Asian countries has led to deep seeded animosity and no Chinese, Korean or Japanese person wants to be considered being from another Asian country.

Then stop trying to get people to call you an American when you aren't from the USA since that is the demonym for a citizen of the US. The Americas are too big and contain too many countries requiring the need for more specific demonyms.

I've never met a person from an Asian country that when asked where they are from simply said "Asia." They always state their specific country. The same goes for Europeans.

Some Africans do it, but only for simplicity sake, since so many people are ignorant of specific African countries. I always ask for the specific country.

Yes, I am Dutch and European. Following on from that, is you being Chilean and South American. You saying you are Chilean and American, is akin to me saying I am Dutch and Eurasian.

I am not saying that is right or wrong, identity is a very personal thing, just giving the proper comparison.

Yeah, I'm not talking about people's preferences when talking about where they're from.
We are all Earthlings, yet no one calls themselves and Earthling. Does that make it any less true? Nope. Same with me being an american.

Only when referring to persons of unknown specific origin. Also, it's typically only those of East Asian descent, eventhough people from India are also Asians.

There is no line to be drawn. You're being overly technical and pedantic for argument's sake. You are failing to understand that the world conventionally and historically has referred to people from the United States of America as Americans.

Accept this and stop trying to "educate" people on something that no one in the world needs or wants to be educated about.

If you want to call yourself an American no one is stopping you. You'll at best get a confused reaction when you clarify that you are actually Chilean and at worst be called a dolt for thinking you are "American".
