China's treatment of ethnic minorities in the Xinjiang region came into the spotlight again after a new report found evidence indicating Uighur laborers are being forced to pick cotton by hand.

The research was published by the US-based think-tank the Center for Global Policy and was reviewed by the BBC as well as German newspaper Sddeutsche Zeitung.

An estimated 570,000 workers from three Uighur regions were mobilized to cotton picking operations in 2018, the report found , citing online government documents.

The transfers took place under the Chinese government's "coercive" labor training scheme that involves "military-style management."

"It is impossible to define where coercion ends and where local consent may begin," wrote Adrian Zenz, the researcher who found the documents.

I'm not sure if you're trolling or not but I think his point was that the U.S. should deal with it's own oppression of minorities including Muslim Americans and pitfalls of occupation before pointing the finger at others--that being said it's good this information is out there and it also didn't come from Americans.

It's not so much "b-b-but America!!11" as it is "America and Europe are literally complicit in this crime against humanity". Our entire civilization is built on, and to this day relies upon, slave labor like described in the OP. Pick any big corporation like Apple, Nike, H&M, Adidas, you fucking name it, and they all exploit this and profit from it.

Other countries aren't literally enslaving Muslims. Yes, a lot of countries treat us badly, the US included. But the way that poster phrased it made it seem like they were defending China, like quite a few posters on here do.

Yeah but if we draw attention to China treating minorities poorly and then ignore the fact that our whole economy and wealth relies on it, then honestly I think we're missing a big part of the problem. H&M aren't any less evil just because they pay other people to do the slavery.
And you're absolutely right that with regards to China, there's probably not a lot we can do. But we might try and organize at home, and hold local politicians responsible for their complicity. Because yeah, our elected leaders in our countries aren't just turning a blind eye to these giant corporations, they're actively encouraging them.

I mean I get that there are other sources supporting some claims (and even China itself has admitted that there are re-education camps allegedly for job training or anti-terrorism education, which is shady as far as Im concerned) but literally in the very article you shared, the source of the claims about forced sterilization is.... *drumroll*.... Adrian Zenz.

Again, Im not saying its all made up, just saying that there are a lot of claims and reports coming from what I find to be an incredibly dubious source, and they are being taken more or less at face value by large news media companies.
