Horror movie "that guy" and noted method actor Brad Dourif was Tim Burton's choice to play the Joker, but the studio wanted an A-lister and went with Jack Nicholson instead.

I have to wonder how things might've been different. For starters, Nicholson was a bigger star than Michael Keaton. And they had to babysit him a little bit because of it. In a film titled Batman, the actor playing the Joker was first billed. And even after Joker got his skin bleached, they had a few scenes where Joker wore makeup to appear normal again. These scenes aren't bad, but they don't really contribute to the overall story either. They're just there to remind us what Jack Nicholson's face looked like.

For another thing, an epic showdown between Batman and the Joker was pretty much out of the question as there's no way an A-list celebrity in his early 50s was going to do extensive fight choreography. With Dourif being in his late 20s at the time, he might have. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate how they worked around the physical limitations and gave Batman a worthy fight against a muscular henchman. But I can't help but wonder what it would have been like had Batman and Joker gone toe to toe.

Would Brad Dourif have become a big star? Would the film have lost much of its marketing due to the lack of a big celebrity? Would the film have been darker and taken The Dark Knight's thinly-censored R-rated movie approach? Would Brad Dourif have made life hell for his coworkers by remaining in-character at all times?

That actually sounds awesome, never knew about this.

It's funny to me because the 9-year old kids like myself that made this movie so successful barely knew who Jack Nicholson was.

only jokers i like are heath ledger and mark hamill. would have been neat to see hamill fill the role.
