I'm sure most people were aware of the obvious impacts like being unable to use Google docs, but I hadn't even considered the possibility of being unable to turn your own lights on or off because you've converted your house to a smart home and everything runs through google.

The outage also affected Google-connected smart devices such as Home speakers - leading some users to complain on social media of being unable to switch off some lights in their homes.

It also had a knock-on effect on other apps, with players of the smartphone game Pokmon Go, for example, reporting being unable to log in.

There is a reason I have all of my smart lights still connected to hardwired on/off switches so they can be controlled without an internet connection.

I noticed my Google homes weren't working and figured it was some kind of outage.

Pretty dumb.

Just like, there's this amazing looking bathroom accesory I want (it's a facial scrubber for exfoliating). It has an electronic component. But unlike every other device I use for that kind of stuff, this one needs an app. And I'm like "what if the service goes down"

So dumb.

Why would you want the basic functions of your home tied to an outside source like that?

this exact reason is why i never will use a smart home or smart anything that requires an internet connection for basic things (locking/unlocking my house, starting/unlocking my car, even smart refrigerators are a thing).

Eh, I think smart products are incredibly handy.
  • Smartphone - Tons of functionality in a single small device
  • Smart home - Ability to control lights with my voice (Mine are also connected to hard light switches, so an outage doesn't really affect anything). I can turn one of my smart TVs on/off with my voice. I can set reminders with my voice. Hear the weather, set reminders, play music, etc.

I agree that having the smart home products set up so that having the app working is the only method of controlling said things is a bad idea, but they're definitely beneficial.

Google just controls the app you use for the lights. Without Google home i can just control my lights through the Hue app.

Idk why he couldnt do that. Alexa does the same thing
