There are good and bad episodes in all seasons. A lot of people just really stuck with the "It got bad after it got too popular" mentality and won't admit it. Some people have that hipster logic stuck deep in their brain still.

I find it odd how in the most recent season(s) the writers have considerably put effort into ongoing story arcs and character development, while the comedy is still so lazy.

Like the first 7 seasons of Simpsons, FG had a legendary writing team for the 3 seasons and was never the same after.

Honestly I never cared about Family Guy in the early seasons, it was just there in the background. When it came back with season 4 I remember thinking "huh now the show has actual staying power".

Same with Rick and Morty.

It got amazing when Meg turned 18

First season after it came back was just as good then the quality started dropping slowly until it got to the point that it didn't even get pity chuckles from me

I saw a random episode from one of the newer seasons where Peter turns his attic into a man cave. Him and the guys are hanging out up there and they have an "insulation fight" and start pulling the insulation off the walls and beating each other with it. It was fucking hilarious and I love the completely out of nowhere bits like that.

From season 12 and onwards they've stopped trying to be meaningful and started focusing being as silly as possible with the cutaway and the nonsensical plots and it's never been better because of it

I will say though season 8, 9, 10 & 11 were fucking terrible and that's when a lot of people jumped ship

It has good jokes post-cancellation but it's not a good show anymore. At that point you're really just better off watching individual clips online or whatever.

It doesn't get really, really bad until ~7 or 8.

Five and beyond are a noticeable dip in quality, though. Like, really noticeable. At some point, they started trying to tell 'real' stories with consistent character development and story continuity. They tried to get all 'serious' with the themes, and also went even further with the excessive gore and gross-out humor.

The first few seasons are funny because they're so fucking clever. The latter seasons are funny in a less...unique way. They're just standard sitcom episodes with 'wacky twists' like "what if two old guys were competing for Chris' affection, but one of them was actually a NAZI and we spent like 7 minutes making fun of old guys fighting in slow motion, Wouldn't that be FUCKING HILARIOUS!?"

There were definitely giant dips. But it picks back up. I still watch it from front to back. It's a comfort show, if nothing else. There's some really good character responses sprinkled throughout the entire series.

If you think the writing style didn't change after a certain point from the way the earliest seasons are, I don't know what to tell you dude. I'm sure there's a couple decent episodes in the later batch but I have no motivation to dumpster dive looking for them when there's a zillion other television options in the present day.

It's ironically the same thing that happened with The Simpsons, more or less, and you can't argue that had to do with its popularity because the seasons everybody loves are from when it was most popular.

The style absolutely changed but the thing is I think it changed for the better significantly.

Like, look at Quagmire from the first episode. He's completely unrecognizable from the character he is now. I'd even say it was likely that when that episode was made, McFarlane wasn't anticipating him being a recurring character. So they gave him a character with their own flanderized gimmick and then he could be a reusable vector for those jokes.

And some of the original gimmicks got played out fast and aren't brought up much anymore like stewie trying to kill Lois. Which is another change for the better IMO.

Overall the show has improved I feel.

Im always entertained when its on TBS or whatever other channel its syndicated on. Because it relies on cheap gags, you always know about what youre gonna get. Better staying power than the latter seasons of The Simpsons, although obviously peak Family Guy is several tiers below peak Simpsons.
