The PlayStation 2 is a remarkable system. However, it was a machine with a design philosophy rooted in iterative thinking and a non-gaming focus -- one that set the industry on a markedly different trajectory.

Since Sony caught fire with the PlayStation 2, the industry has progressed in a slow, iterative manner that relies upon consoles being more than just machines that play games. It was such a successful machine that Xbox fell into step with it -- even in light of Nintendo continuing to innovate and double down on gimmicks.
