We don't often to gift exchanges for holidays or birthdays or whatever. But every now and then I find something or feel it's an extra special occasion and want to try to surprise her.

And somehow it gets revealed and ruined in some way every. single. fucking. time.

The time I tried to throw her a surprise party and her dipshit friend called HER and asked her if she could bring her new boyfriend.

The time I was remodeling her room the way she had always wanted, but she decided to come home from her trip days early, so I barely had time to do anything.

Even small things, like making a nice elaborate dinner, she'll call and tell me she's picking up food, I'll have to talk her out of it and by the time I do, it's obvious that I have something "special" planned.

This is our first Christmas since we bought this house and she wasn't expecting anything. I had bought her TONS of shit. I had everything delivered to my work or my mom's house.

Except for ONE item that I had to have shipped directly to the house. Had it scheduled for a day she would be at work. But now her work made her get a non-rapid covid test. So she'll be home and it will be delivered before I'm home.

So I had a bit of a meltdown. Not aimed at her, obviously, because it's not her fault, just the universe fucking me over in general.
Afterwards I realized I could have probably played it off as stuff my mom had sent here for my dad, but I was too frustrated to not a be a fucking idiot, and it's ruined. She knows not to open the box coming tomorrow because it part of her present.

I feel so incredibly deflated. After such a shit year, I was really looking forward to this. She still doesn't know what I got her, or how much I got her, but the actual excitement was for her waking up and finding a bunch of unexpected presents.

Sigh. BlogFAQs

I think you should focus more on the fact that you are doing nice things for your wife and I'm sure she really appreciates it, even if you can't make it a big grand surprise.

You sound very thoughtful, JIM. Even if it isn't a complete surprise, she still appreciates you thinking of her, right?

I don't understand the problem here then. If you tell her "Hey one of your presents is arriving before I get home, don't look at it." then what's the issue? That's what me and my wife do, if we know a present is arriving, we give each other a heads up to avoid present spoilers lol.

The problem is that she wasn't expecting anything at all. We usually don't exchange. The gift itself wasn't the important part for me, it was the surprise of there being gifts at all, lol.

The surprise being ruined was bad enough, but later realizing that if I just calmed down and thought it over I could have covered it as being stuff my mom sent to the house makes it even worse. What a doofus.

She might be really surprised that you just keep trying despite the failures...and you just keep doing nice things.

That's the most surprising bit of all. Embrace that.

Ohhh, that makes more sense. Kinda weird to not exchange gifts period lol, but I get that the surprise was ruined.

So you know what you do now? Tell her, "oh I wanted to get you one little gift this year since it's been such a bad year..."
Then, you can still have the surprise of that one single gift turning into a bunch of gifts on Christmas morning.

We exchanged early in the relationship like normal people, but we've been together 20 years now and kinda ran out of ideas. We just focus on buying for our families. When we want something for ourselves, we just buy it.

But yeah, downplaying the gift(s) is what I have moved onto.
