I know it seems crazy fast, but if you throw enough money and resources at something that usually takes years of course it will be expedited down to a few months.

And remember, this isn't a new virus. They already know plenty about this family of virus, so the harder part is figuring out the serotype which can be achieved via genomic testing. Once they have that there is software programs that can model the kind of proteins that will be attracted to and bind the antigen.

So the development wouldn't be like starting from scratch it's just refining it via in vitro and now in vivo testing.

I personally think I want to be vaccinated but my bf is super unsure of the vaccine so I probs won't be able to get it. I try to live as pandemic aware as possible though.

You can't just get it yerself? I'm skeptical cause I've always been but at this point we've gotten so many shots that it's just like 'welp, fuck it I guess'

True, but the other stuff of it not being a "new" virus and just modifying existing vaccines makes me feel better. Like it's not a brand new vaccine for a brand new disease they just pulled out of their ass in a few months.

Millions of people are going to get it before you, and there will probably shortage. There will be a much higher likelihood of not even having the option to start off with then you sitting there wondering whether you should get it.

Man hours can be sped up through increased labor force, but increased labor force means more supervision needed which means more possible oversights. Long term testing cannot be sped up, so that depends on how much testing needs to be done to consider it viable. It's most likely that it'll all be fine, but there are certainly legitimate concerns over it. The problem is the stigma of the anti-vaxxers really muddies the discussion.

That first paragraph is basically what I've tried to tell people. Yes, it is unusual that a vaccine has come out this quickly. But we're also talking about a virus caused a global pandemic and crippled the economy.

The speed of its release has less to do with it being haphazard and rushed, and more to do with the fact that every pharmaceutical researcher has put possibly more focus into it than any other drug so the world can't be fractured anymore.

i hate when people say this, has there ever been a vaccine that had long term effects after taking it a year+ later? like if a vaccine is going to have any potential side effects then they're going to happen sooner rather than later >_>

This is the the brains of the topic right here. All kinds of unforeseen consequences could develop over extended periods of time...we don't have that kind of time though apparently so we better damn well hope they did a good job.
