(US) How can they be public ands still cost money? Why do they only give you half of your degree? No gotcha here I'm just confused.

Google will either give me too much information or just the answer to the wrong question.

Edit Community colleges. I guess that somewhat answers it but not really, idk why they exist and only give you half your degree.

Theyre public because they receive public funding. You pay half the amount for the full degree because the government/city/whatever pays the other half.

Community colleges can give you a full degree. Many cant support BS programs in every subject so they offer an AS program to students. Just like many places cant support a PhD program in every subject so they just up to BS. Continuity colleges also can cost as much as traditional universities.

All public college should be payed for by the government

and it should just become a standardized thing for students after high school

because holy shit are most 18 year olds still way too stupid to start just doing shit in the world
