like, I haven't really played much of Assassin's Creed since the Desmond trilogy (+ Revelations), and I played very little of AC 4: Black Flag and Unity

I wasn't a big fan of the mission structure, though, enemies waiting to hit you during combat, the tailing, social stealth, and half-ass stealth mechanics, etc.

does Origins improve on those things?

I ask because it's currently about $11.99 on PSN

Origins marks the beginning of the series' shift to a more RPG style approach, with less emphasis on stealth and more on the combat system.

Origins is solid. Probably the best story-driven AC out of the newest trio. Odyssey is the biggest. Valhalla has been fun so far.

I enjoyed it quite a bit
The biggest step up it makes is in the dialogue and acting from both the main characters and supporting cast. The environments are really nice, but they feel less "assassin's creedy" than the older games.
They also did a better job of the present-day stuff in Origins than they had in Rogue, Unity and Syndicate.

My main advice would be to only do side missions that seem cool, or ones that are quired for progression, unlocks or achievements. They are ok, but there are too many of them and if you sink a lot of time on them you'll burn out.
People tell me AC Odyssey is even worse in that regard, but possibly the better game overall.

Origins reinvented the series and created a much more exploration-based game. I think mostly it will depend on if you like open world games. I thought it was great, and really liked the main character a lot.

Odyssey had radiant quests, which is good for grinding money and XP but the quality of those sidequests was not great. I lost track of how many times I was asked to kill X number of sharks anywhere in Greece, often by people in completely landlocked cities lol

I took the plunge, y'all, and got the Assassin's Creed Antiquity Pack (Assassin's Creed: Origins and Assassin's Creed: Odyssey) for $25

let's see how this is...in 9+ hours (then a few hours more for patches).

edit: thank you all again

I preferred Odyssey over Origins, but I also preferred Greece over Egypt. Odyssey does have a lot of bloat, but I liked how your dialogue choices can actually affect things later on in the game. Plus Kassandra is bae.

But Origins is more focused and Bayek is a better main character tbh.

I think it's safe to say Origins tells a better, more concise story but Odyssey is mechanically a leap ahead.

There's a lot of cool systems to engage with in Odyssey, and the improved camera and dialogue choices elevates the sidequests massively compared to Origins' stale, zoomed out "Listen to NPC monologue at you about whatever crap they want you to find/kill" banal ones.

I enjoyed both of them a lot but I'm glad I played Origins first.

Major Odyssey gameplay spoilers to do a thing that made the game actually fun (for me):

Seriously, spoilers:
The Falx of Olympos has a special engraving, [+100% Damage but Health Capped to 25%]. It is in an underwater ruin called the Palace of Amphitrite, between islands Thera and Paros. You can make a beeline for it very early in the game..

I actually think Bayek is the best AC protagonist they've had. I don't know if it's because I'm a parent or what but I really related to that dude

But the TC really seems to have fallen out of love with the 'true' ac games. They had some good and some bad. The whole follow mission thing with you just following an enemy waiting for the action to start was a core part of the old AC formula but it was also fairly boring. I'll also agree that even though it looked cool the whole counter counter counter insta kills abound gameplay of the past few Assassin's Creed games is less fun to me than the new combat in the ones since Origins.

Bayek is a great character, gameplay is refreshing, setting is amazing and one of my favorite video game worlds ever.

Story has its ups and downs. Does a great job at establishing the character and assassins, but feels like it kinda jumps a lot and drags on at times and did give me times where I felt detached and disinterested and went through with some things just to check it off my list.

If youve gotten bored with AC sometime between III and Syndicate this will be a great change of pace.

He's very different from Ezio. Personally I did like Bayek better, and also his wife Aya who shows up throughout the game is fucking awesome as well. She could honestly have her own AC game

idk if it's because they're downloading simultaneously, but it's saying that Origins has 15 hours left to download, and Odyssey has 50 more.

dayum

Did the downloads complete yet? I agree with the statements above about Bayek and Aya. Also one of my favourite depictions of a couple in a video game.

yea, I played a little of Origins, and it's feeling different from previous games, so far.

haven't seen anything outside of the Animus yet, but I'm only at level 4.

idk if there are any side-activities like cards, or something, but I think they would be cool.

i only played odyssey, but that game felt like a bunch of Ubisoft's finance guys got together, created a list of popular video game qualities, and then fed them to an AI that created Odyssey. there was not a single moment where i thought there was thoughtful or creative design
