Germanys top diplomat in the UK has dismissed claims that the rollout of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine is a British victory, describing it as an international effort.

Ambassador Andreas Michaelis pointed out that the German company BioNTech had played a crucial role in developing the jab. It came after Director General of the World Health Organisation Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus confirmed the UK was the first country to authorise the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine.

Mr Michaelis made his comments on Wednesday after Business Secretary Alok Sharma hailed the UK as the first to sign a deal.

Mr Sharma said: In years to come, we will remember this moment as the day the UK led humanitys charge against this disease.

The comments appeared to rankle Ambassador Michaelis, who tweeted: Why is it so difficult to recognize this important step forward as a great international effort and success. I really don't think this is a national story. In spite of the German company BioNTech having made a crucial contribution this is European and transatlantic.

Former Labour minister Lord Adonis agreed, adding: Well said Mr Ambassador. So refreshing hear the voice of European co-operation rather than the Brexiter voice of xenophobia and petty nationalism.

Some 800,000 doses of the Pfizer vaccine will be available in the UK from next week following Wednesdays announcement, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

Care home residents and care workers will be the first to be vaccinated, the Government confirmed. The jab has been shown in studies to be 95 per cent effective and works in all age groups.

I mean he has a point.

Kinda dumb to parade Brexit as a good idea with no justification while at the same time ignoring the vaccine that will save hundreds of thousands of lives and the economy was due to the EU and international co-operation.
