Ive never played an MMORPG, but I keep hearing great things about FF14. So I have a few questions, if anyone is kind enough to help a newb out...

Do I need to know other people who also have the game to play through it, or is it easy enough to join random people for any of the multiplayer parts of the game?

Which version should I get... the standard version, a Realm Reborn, Shadowbringers? Does it matter?

Are there any fees to play the game other than just the cost of purchasing the game?

Is it possible to play it as a single player experience, or is that not possible? Or is it possible, but it greatly diminishes the game?

You buy the base game, A Realm Reborn and then the latest expansion if you're into it. A monthly subscription is like 15 bucks a month

You can easily play by yourself, but dungeons and raids require partying with others, which is super easy in this game since it has a match making service so you wont be waiting long

Worth pointing out that the free trial is a ton of content and once you purchase the game youre paying a subscription for content you could've gone through for free if you wanna save some money.

Entire base game and first expansion you can all do on free trial.

This. Literally 60 hours of a free game

The free version does have some restrictions though

Yeah, you can play a good chunk of the game for free, though youre heavily limited in social features (to keep RMTs from using free accounts to spam advertising to other players). You cant DM, join a guild (Free company) or start a party (though you can queue up for matchmaking to do group content). You also cant trade with people, buy/sell on the market to other players, and are limited in how much money you can save.

You can play for free for 30 days.

You can solo basically other than:

Every few levels a dungeon opens up. For these you enter a queue and play with 3 random strangers or you can come with a friend you made.
These are really easy though so random strangers aren't a hassle and tbh they usually don't even talk.

Later on, more than dungeons open such as 8 man single boss fights and 24 man raids.
24 man raids are optional.
8 man boss fights are like dungeons but a little harder later on, but still very easy.

If you want a challenge, you do the optional difficulty ramp up fights but these are way past what you will unlock in 30 days. This is the part where you have to put up with other players more.
If you don't care about challenge, you can avoid it entirely.

1)Nope, the game will automatically find people for you for most of the things in the game. And for the things it doesn't, it has features that make it really easy to find others.
2)Neither - FFXIV actually has an insane free trial (that has no time limit!) that lets you play the entire game through its first expansion, which is through lvl 60. If you're liking it during the free trial, what you can do is buy the game but not attach the serial key to your account until you reach the end of the free trial so you can maximize the amount you get to play for free.
3)$15 a month, which is well worth it for the insane amount of content that it provides, IMO.
4)The only time other people are necessary are when doing dungeons and trials. That's it. The story is elsewise by yourself and it is absolutely wonderful.

im pretty sure its like 15 a month for standard subrcription, which gives you 8 alts per server if you want. $12 for the basic which is just 1 character per server which is all you really need unless you like having alts.

To add on a bit to that. You can still join parties so if you have a friend who owns the game the biggest downside is gone.
