From what I gather:

  • Three players; one goes after the ball, one supports (if something goes wrong), one covers the goal (defense)
  • Players who goes after the ball must rotate back to defense once they lose control, support players rotate towards the ball, defense players rotate to support

Pretty much that. I like to keep a maximum of half a field between the defender and the play. Those on defense should try to shoot a centered ball while the one centering rotates to the defender position. At least, that's how I play with my cousin and our friend.

What I usually do is try to fly through the air in the direction of the ball, miss entirely, and then get stuck at the wrong end of the field with no boost while the opponents score a goal.

Back up and wait for a seemingly good opening, then go full speed and crash into your teammate as he cuts in last second. Rinse. Repeat.

That's what you're supposed to do... but the defender always goes for the ball and the other team scores

If you're playing a public match by yourself, you'll always be on defense because the other two players will always be rushing the ball.

Rotation depth is always dependent on the depth of the ball, the position of the opposing players (They're ability to attack it with speed), and the direction the ball is moving. If the defense is clustered close to the ball and it's near the opposing goal, typically the support will play the wall side while the deep player rotates up into a striker position. If the ball is in a neutral position, the deep player should be quite deep but ready to come out on a loose ball or contest if needed. If the ball is on your side of the court, you should likely be playing the far post as the deep man. The attacker and support players should rotate back to the deep position if they run out of boost or get knocked out of the play.

The actual position and speed of the opposing players (And teammates) can change any of these guidelines though.

By the time you get to Gold most players will have decent rotation sense, Platinum you can usually rely on them to rotate. It doesn't particularly matter, though, as if you've developed your mid-airs and and scoring skill set enough to complain about rotations you should just be playing ball dominant whenever you can in the lower leagues. I'm only a low Diamond player (Or was, when I played), but bad rotations don't particularly matter when you're anticipating the ball movements far better than your opposition and teammates.

I've ranked up multiple accounts through bronze and silver and there's really no excuse. If you want to start playing with people who rotate well then you need to earn it by showcasing your technical skills in the lower leagues.

I was wondering if I rotate correctly because I'll remind teammates to do so, but they reply with how trash I am and to stay out of the way. But from what I understand, those teammates were cutting me off and creating gaps in our defense.

I found this article that I agree with.
