Id rather them be the trend than fps games to be honest.

My biggest gripe with open world is it makes it harder to enjoy non open world games. Not that i can't but i keep getting "wish I could fully explore this place" feelings

This is me every time I play any of the Uncharted.

this is definitely part of it. but i don't need a "narrative", i have my issues with super-structured movie-games like uncharted as well.

i have never given a fuck that i couldn't climb a mountain in the background of an old game. there's nothing on that mountain. it's a fucking mountain.

i think it's a lack of imagination that's required to enjoy these games, if anything

I think the problem with most open world games is that they have no reason to be open world other than because it exists. I think Ubisoft games are the biggest culprit of this. While I think BotW is the opposite and revels in its exploration even if its mostly empty.

I kinda agree but if its a good open world game you dont know that there is nothing up there. And if graphics are good I just like exploring and enjoying scenery from time to time. I emerge myself in a game world.

I just like actually feeling like I'm going on some grand adventure. You see a mountain, tower, or landmark in the distance and say to yourself "I want to go there."

Sure, when you do get there there may be nothing of any significance, but the journey was worth it.

I have massive open world fatigue these days, but breath of the wild was terrific and was a rare open world game that felt like its open world was core the to gameplay and narrative and not the other way around.

Would Kamurocho count as an open world? It's small, but absolutely packed with things to do (in Yakuza 0, at least. I haven't played the others)

I dont mind them, I just hate when they become checklist games where the open world concept is just a mechanism for getting the player to do nonstop busywork. I like when the world feels real and like youre actually exploring it, finding new things & uncovering stories

Same. Linear games are better in every way.

The only open world game I loved in recent memory was Red Dead 2, and I loved it for the story and characters, not the world or gameplay. Oh, and Spider-Man, because it's motherfucking Spider-Man. Witcher 3 was okay, despite it being pretty overrated, in my opinion, both in story and gameplay. I'm interested in Cyberpunk 2077 though, just because that world looks interesting.

There has to be a good narrative in any game I play, or I lose interest quickly. I didn't like BotW, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, Far Cry, Horizon Zero Dawn, etc.

I like some of them (New Vegas, Morrowind, GTA games), but I definitely prefer games that are somewhere in the middle between totally linear and open world, e.g. Metroidvanias, immersive sims like Deus Ex, regular RPGs, etc. Games that are open enough to let you explore, but structured enough that you can't just wander in any direction, and need to use your character's abilities to get around.

For the most part, for me to like an open world game there has to be a compelling narrative backed up by interesting lore and characters. That's why I like NV and MW, and will probably like Cyberpunk 2077 when it comes out.

I love open world games because I like to immerse myself in them. Sometimes I don't even need an objective. In RDR2 I spent days out just hunting random animals and camping in the woods.

I get the appeal of this but at the same time I start to get massive FOMO. Like I could be hunting a rabbit in this game for 3 hours, or I could open up this other game and blow up 75 buildings....
