Dunks and Jordan 1s used to hit clearance racks. It was less populated so lining up and getting something for retail was very real. Now bots and resellers have made that nearly impossible. The bubble will burst eventually and these hypebeasts will burn out and move to the next thing.

I feel like spending thousands or tens of thousands of dollars on sneakers you will never use is not being an ethical consumer. I generally feel that about most "luxury collectibles" though. Why not spend that excess cash on something that is more ethically produced instead of literal sweatshop labor designed to exploit people's desire to peacock? Why not give that money to your friends, family, or even charity? It's just so gross.

"But you spend money on sweatshop clothing!"

Yeah, but I ain't got the money to throw around to do otherwise, and in a market like that boycotting necessities cannot create any meaningful change. Ultimately changes to those business practices need to come from the top-down. The manufacturers have far to much leverage against the average consumer in terms of price control and availability. However, for luxury goods, I cannot find any way to rationalize exploiting foreign labor in such a manner, especially when the actual product is a literal showpiece that's been produced on a production line and sold with the same marketing concepts as actual art produced for the sake of artistic creation.

Hahah, I made some poor person spend 3 minutes stitching the sole on to this sneaker so I could store it in a closet and brag about it.

That's some peak malignant consumer behavior.

Yeah, a capitalist society would work great if people weren't such selfish bastards.

I mean it used to be an inner-city, NYC thing first. Because shoe companies focused on marketing toward a demographic that companies have ignored for decades.

Once black people made sneakers not just an accessory but a focal point of an outfit, then you have the scum coming in and collecting/hording/jacking up the re-sell prices.
