https://www.vgchartz.com/game/121499/prey-2017/ (not counting Steam sales)

wtf how was this a commercial failure? I've been playing it since November and with the wide amount of accessibility, freedom, and atmosphere you can experience, this is absolutely GOTY-calibre -__-

It was alright. I got 10+ hours out of it before losing interest. Lack of enemy variety is a huge complaint for me in games

God damn shame. I guess at this point Arkane is just used to their constant stream of masterpieces failing. Hopefully Microsoft gives them enough of a push to really dunk one.

Weeeeelll... Space Invaders for the Atari 2600 sold over one million copies and was its killer app, launching the console into stardom. Of course, that was when programming a game could be done by one person in a few months at a cost of two and a half pop corns.

When devs do dumb stuff like spending months coming up with realisitc hair movements, these games become failures unless literally everyone buys them.
Not sure if they did this for said game, but it is an example.

This isn't the case here.

1 million is like 100 copies to Bethesda.

Single player stealth games don't sell. Dishonored, Deus ex, MGS5 all under performed

Not an established franchise

Asian main character

Horror, Sci fi, magic and stealth are all niche and you have to like all 4 to like the game Graphically ugly and behind the times

Terrible marketing campaign

Basically it had 0 mainstream appeal whatsoever

It's a crime that this game is so underrated. Being named prey hurt it more than it should. They shouldnm just name it "space shock " or something got to so with system shock.

It must be or they would have been profitable.

Fyi, atlus games sell less copies and still make a profit.

I've heard nothing but good things about it. It really seems like a testament to the importance of good marketing.

That said, I'm still a little salty that they scrapped the original concept for Prey 2, it sounded so cool

God this is such weak bait, all of those underperformed not because they were stealth but for a myriad of reasons

It failed because Bethesda slapped on the name Prey to keep the IP under their copyright library despite it having nothing to do with that IP and then didn't market is like at all.

People really overplay the importance of the ip. The original Prey was not exactly a hot commodity in its day and had been all but forgotten about long before this game was announced. It was a cult classic at best and there were not people confused about it's relationship to this game. The cancelled sequel had more influence on it than the original game and Joe Q Public never even knew about the sequel. This game lived and died entirely on its own.

This and plus the way Bethesda screwed over Human Head Studios and Prey 2 killed it for me.

Think Bethesda also did that for Doom 2016 and Rage although that's just my guess. Fuck that company (the publisher).

Yeah calling it Prey seems to be part of it. I know gamefaqs doesn't necessarily reflect what everyone else thinks, but countless times I saw the reaction to Prey being "It's not Prey 2". I think a good chunk of people wrote it off immediately for that reason.
