Would they still be hated if they weren't there "just to sell toys"?

I never hated the Ewoks. Like sure the shit with C-3PO being their god or whatever was silly but them getting their shit wrecked by the AT-ST walkers was intense as fuck and the scene where the one Ewok crawls over to his friends body and mourns him was basically the most emotionally evocative moment in the whole movie aside from Vader/Luke stuff.

That was actually something George Lucas lifted from the Buck Rogers film serial. In that story, there are a group of mutants who believe that a mind-controlled "robot" slave is a god.

The complaint isn't that they had toys, it's that a lot of people perceived them as only existing to make toys of. I personally disagree but it's whatever

A phrase that can be repeated about pretty much every story beat in the entire original trilogy, honestly. I still thought it was silly.

They were always extremely silly. The idea that ultra-advanced, state of the art space-steel bipedal walkers would be irrevocably tripped up by rolling logs...it was just cartoonish. The same for Stormtrooper armor being vulnerable to rocks and arrows.

Star Wars might never have been truly 100% realistic and serious in its action scenes, but Return of the Jedi brought a new level of cartoonish weirdness to the mix. From Boba Fett's comedy 'death' to the Ewoks defeating the Empire while also smacking themselves in the face with their own slingshot rocks...it was just odd.

The original idea was for the battle to occur on Kashyyyk, which would have been much cooler in the long-run.
