I should probably qualify a few of my prior entries...

The second half of s2 of Dark Angel is ugly, they'd set up for at least 5 seasons and found out they were getting cancelled and tried to do 3 seasons in like 6 episodes.

Kinda the same story with Fringe after the timeskip.

I do also love most of next gen Trek era, and DS9 was probably me favorite out of the 3. TNG was good, Voyager only makes sense if you watch it thru the lens of Janeway being bipolar and Tuvok and the EMH covering her condition...Sisko was by far the best Captain out of the 3. He was the only Captain that had a sensible reaction to Q's presence on his watch. He went and punched him in the face. You don't reason with Q.

We don't even need to get into how Firefly was done dirty.

I answer this shit so often and wind up deliberating that I should just write the damn thing down.

Off the top of my head:

Simpsons (although the new season has been pretty terrible, and I enjoyed some of the recent seasons)

JL/U

...and that's usually where I freeze every time. Simpsons is fucking easy. JL/U is fucking easy. Everything else? Kinda hard. If I know a show well enough to quote large chunks of it and STILL can enjoy re-watching it, that's pretty much the gold standard and there isn't a lot that rises to that level. There a a lot of shows I enjoyed once, but couldn't even watch a second time.

Granted, "top" has multiple interpretations and it's going into quality then that's another whole can of worms right there, I tell you what.

I'd say Daredevil, but that's really off the strength of season 1 and season 2 was nowhere near as good and season 3 started rough.

I loved s1 of Iron Fist, but s2 was more of a mixed bag.

Twilight Zone was generally great. I've seen a lot of it many times and, if an episode is on, I'll still watch through.

Modern Family could be a contender, but I haven't watched the later part of its run.

I guess 30 Rock could be an option, but I haven't rewatched that many episodes. Same for ATLA, which I haven't done a full second run of.

idk, I've watched tons of shows over the years. Kinda hard to pick.

It's so hard for me to do this because what I enjoyed most, what left the strongest impression on my life, and what I'm most impressed with are all different and it's hard to know how much to weight each of those things.

Especially with comedy vs drama. Drama is more "impressive" to me generally if it's done well such that a theoretically perfect drama should be rated higher than a perfect comedy but I have for sure gotten much more enjoyment out of long running comedies. Then most of the shows that really changed my life were more of a right place right time sort of deal rather than actually being profound or even well made.

  1. Monogatari Series
  2. Code Geass
  3. Futurama
  4. Legend of the Galactic Heroes
  5. The Shield

That's my best attempt I guess. There's truly nothing like monogatari for me. A few anime have a similar style but they are cheap imitations without the writing behind it. A rare case of a perfect combination of writer, director, and funding that honestly just hasn't been topped IMO. It's one of life's great mysteries that a show with so much subtlety and complexity and weirdness and talking manages to have mainstream popularity in anime but I'm not complaining.

Code geass is the show I've rewatched the most. I think I've seen it 8 times now. It's not flawless (the first half of the 2nd season is pretty crap and a lot of the battle victories are just environmental dues ex machinas) but god damn does it do so much right and really drag you along for the ride. It helps that it's in a genre that I love but is under-served which is military strategy anime that for some reason is 90% mecha. Whilst it is less grand and intelligent as LotGH lower down on the list, it has a much better presentation and really manages to hit the mark on everything well for me. It's maybe the most well rounded show I've seen with it's drama, action, romance, comedy, and strategy all being stellar.

Futurama is my favorite comedy. The cast is fun to watch do just about anything. I've probably seen every episode of the original run like 5-6 times and seen the newer episodes at least twice each. Probably my favorite show to just casually watch where it's fine if I have to get up and miss a few minutes.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes despite having a terrible name is probably the grandest epic I've ever experienced. Theres over 100 important named characters and every one of em is well written. It tells the story of a conflict on all levels from the government to the generals to the every type of solider to the media. I doubt I'll ever experience a story with larger scale thats even half this well written. It's not quite perfect but it's damn close.

Been a while since I watched the shield so honestly a rewatch might bump this down the list but I feel like it's often overlooked. A fantastic crime/police drama with maybe the most powerful ending I've ever seen. It's really good and I prefer it over the wire despite that also being really good.

Honorable mentions:
Black Sails (honestly probably deserves a spot over the shield. Really amazing and has hot lesbians)
Firefly
Samurai Champloo
Cowboy Bebop
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (and 2nd gig)
Made In Abyss (maybe when it's finished it'll move up, top 1 OST though)

Hard to tell. Corri has been going almost 60 years so I'd imagine the other soaps will. Although with that said Brookside didn't last. I'd imagine if I stopped watching these soaps I'd find it hard to get back into them too. Even more so when they give old characters new heads!

WWE Raw

Probably should have listed wrestling rather than Only Fools and Horses but I don't have a favourite wrestling show. I'm more invested in AEW Dynamite at this point but watch both WWE and AEW multiple times a week. Have done sine around 4(much like with soaps) but I did take a break when we didn't have Sky anymore. So I guess I've been watching for 25 years or so.

I've periodically watched WWE's stuff over the years, but I think I've only ever regarded NXT as anything special because it tended to be very light on filler, it was largely self-contained (unlike Raw and SD which bleed into each other), and it tended to have a better mix of content. However, I'm sure most of that has changed.

That said, Raw was often fun for the spectacle, etc.

Not really. NXT is still better for the most part and most of the current talent now is from there. Who knew a 51 year old son in law knows better about wrestling than a 75 year old, out of touch father in law.
