I think Naruto and One Piece are better overall but the hype levels of that soul society arc are unmatched by anything I remember happening outside of like...Enies Lobby?

Issues with Bleach IMO

  1. Way too many characters got introduced at once. After season 1, I was just getting to know Ichigo and friends. Now I'm supposed to know and care about all of the Shinigami Captains and their lieutenant? The show pushed hard for us to care for a lot of the captains and their own plot lines. Dunno about yall but I gave no fucks about them. Really wished Ichigo would have killed some of them TBH.
  2. Soul Society was initially and literally supposed to be a heaven paradise. It is not. When we get to Soul Society we see and learn that there are things like poverty, classism, a hierarchy system and a monarchy. So suffer as a human and when you die you'll go suffer in the afterlife as well.
  3. Although I liked the Heuco Mundo arc, I can definitely see how it's unappealing. It's a lot of the same of the Soul Society Arc. This means a few things such as Bleach writers were afraid to try something new so they fell back on a systematic route or that the writers ran out of ideas or that they're a slave to corporate.
  4. The Aizen arc felt rushed for me. He was like the biggest baddie and it felt like his end power was underwhelming. Ichigo caught up to him too fast as well.
  5. Bleach followed a ton of Shonen tropes: A bunch of characters get introduced at once, almost all the initial bad guys become good guys, the power of friendship, MC needs to train to get stronger, MC nearly dies but makes a complete power come back.

If memory serves, Tite Kubo just invented Bleach because he wanted to draw cool characters doing cool things and didn't have a good narrative fleshed our or anything. So it doesn't surprise me if he got bored and ran out of ideas.

There were far too many characters introduced, but most of us loved the captains.

My biggest gripes aside from what you've mentioned:

  1. All of Ichigo's friends get completely sideswept in favour of all these new characters. Fairly typical shonen problem.
  2. Ichigo/Rukia was clearly supposed to be a thing but for whatever reason he shoehorned in Orihime instead. If anything it felt like a pretty conspicuous marketing move rather than a plot driven one. Orihime is hotter, right?
  3. Scaling. Worst scaling maybe of any anime and they just kept tacking on insane new powerups. By the end of it how many different ancestral powers does Ichigo have? Like he's human, shinigami, hollow, quincy, god, part lemur, whatever. Fucking hell he doesn't need to be everything Kubo.
  4. Really weak ending in the manga. I hope they fix that with the new anime coming.

For your #3 I threw all sense of scaling out the window when Renji comes in and easily claps De Masculine after both Kensei and Rose were utterly destroyed by him. I get its supposed to show Renji has reached captain level but am I expected to believe Renji is that much greater than the combined power of two other captains just because he trained with the 0 division.

Yeah I want to see like one show where the MC and his bros at the start grow together and become featured still at the end.

Like I get invested in characters and a fee arcs in, yo here is the new hotness forget those dudes you like! Which always strikes me odd within a power of friendship theme.

Bleach was bad with some high points. I'll never forget the ass whooping Grimmjow laid on Ichigo.

One Piece is like that while also managing to introduce far too many characters.

But at least the straw hats are all still relevant.

Honestly it always seemed like the only choice to watch out of the big 3. The rest either looked like for tweens or had nightmarish character designs (and not in a good way)

The thing that confused me the most was Ishida. He is weak as fuck in every arc, and then in the last arc he is just the quincy king just makes Ishida his successor? Huh? Ishida has not beat a single significant character in the entire manga and now this bitch just gets to be king?

Yeah, but in typical bleach style he had to use the ultimate power up that would permanently destroy his power. they love thst shit in bleach

Ishida was easily captain level by end of manga. Now sure why this is still debated.

Bleach is the king of being an ass pull manga. And the levels of absurdity that goes with that is why your watch or read it.

Its meant to be ridiculous. But god damn does it look cool.

And some of the best stuff hasnt been animated yet with the thousand year blood war arc.

OK but how? Ichigo is constantly training with different people and getting power ups from fights. But Ishida just jerks off by himself and doesn't help in any meaningful way in any single arc and now he is captain level? Maybe I missed a little line of dialogue but the dude doesn't train with anyone, all I ever saw him do past Aizen's arc was play soccer, get his shit rocked in the subsittute shinigami arc, then spend the rest of it in bed or doing nothing. It makes as much sense as Yamcha being Goku's level all of a sudden.
